Product Description

Amazon.co.uk

For too long, every Gorky's album was heralded by an expectant British press as the one that would finally break this fresh-faced band of proto-mediaeval avant-garde prog-folk outsiders to a mainstream audience. Not to be, though--Spanish Dance Troupe is a come-back album from the wilderness, after Gorky's were unceremoniously dumped by their major label paymasters Mercury. Spanish Dance Troupe is yet another wonderful album, of course--we'd hardly expect anything other from Gorky's. Safe to say, though, that the Top 40 won't be unduly troubled by "Poodle Rockin'", which sounds like Madness being kidnapped by a truckload of Cossacks. Nor, for that matter, should radio DJs be unduly tempted to spin tracks like the Dadaist pantomime of "Hair Like Monkey, Teeth Like Dog". But that's the great thing about Gorky's Zygotic Mynci--they're a living, breathing alternative to, well, pretty much everything, actually. --Louis Pattison

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic 9 Nov 1999
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This is absolutely marvellous, although not to everybody's tastes. Not that the album is 'difficult', or even contains any Welsh-language tracks, but the lead singer's high voice could grate somewhat. The Melodies are generally rather catchy, and a few tracks really stand out: 'Spanish Dance Troupe', 'Poodle Rockin'', 'Murder Ballad' and 'Humming Song' won't leave your mind for days. If you like to experiment with music, buy this. If you don't like the world beyond the Stereophonics, don't. As for an opinion, the five stars are because I absolutely LOVE it.

4.0 out of 5 stars they do it again 21 April 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This probably isnt their best album, but like other reviewers Im left wondering how this band keeps coming up with these amazing melodies, and rare precious moments of acounstic beauty. Murder Balland, Over & Out, Desolation Blues & the title track are all splendid examples of their very unique sound, which at the same time seems comfotingly familiar. This album is further proof that Gorky's are building their own musical universe, which seems blissfuly unaware of anyone else. their sound exists somewhere in the head of a small boy wandering about a pembrokeshire beach collecting pebbles. One question has to be asked - why are so many of their previous albums unavailable??? this must be corrected.

my friend reccommended this CD to me and i was surprised how good it was. It's a beautiful mainly acoustic driven indie/folk rock record with unbelievable melodies and gorgeous music. Their sound cane be related to bands like coldplay, murry the hump and the Beatles. Their lyrics are thoughtful and every track is class, even though 2 are eccentric to say the least (poodle rockin and hair like monkey teeth like dog). Other standout tracks are the humming song, over and out an desolation blues. I reccommend this to everyone who likes mellow indie or rock. Its a crime they havent had a hit.
