This album IS Thin White rope's lost classic. I never really got why TWR enthusiasts prefer "The Ruby Sea" or "Moonhead" to this astonishing masterpiece.

Those two albums are undeniably great, but what you have here is a unique experience where a wealth of sounds, melodies and songwriting throw you in a magic world where the underlying darkness comes through with vivid colours. One of those albums that create a universe by itself (like Surfer Rosa and Forever Changes!)

The palette colouring these songs is rich and varied due to the brilliant work of the guitars (some arabic/spanishy acid stuff that creates convoluted but melodic patterns, courtesy of Kunkel/Kyser) and Guy Kyser's dark and abrasive vocals and poetry. Despite the aggression and gloom, counterbalanced by softer lyrical moments, this album is as multi-coloured as the artwork cover, as adventurous as the underwater pirate world of Captain Long John/Brown Silver.

In TWR you can hear traces of Jerry Garcia, Television, 80s R.E.M., Quicksilver, Joy Division, Johnny Cash, Pink Floyd, but their own personality is superior to just adding these parts together.

`In the Spanish Cave' offers more of a mixed bag than other Thin White Rope records. On one hand there are lighter, more commercial-rock sounding tracks like ` Timing' and `Ring' and on the other squally guitar-fests like `Munich Eunuch' and `Elsie Crashed the Party'

On `It's OK', the band's trademark howling guitars are channelled to good effect whilst `Ahr-Skidar' is a curiously spare piece. The highlight of the record, though, is arguable the band's finest moment, `Red Sun'. This is a brilliantly confident indie-rock song with a wonderful extended intro, embellished with horns. This song should have been massive for the band.

Along with the mixture of styles, the quality of the songs is a little inconsistent. `Munich..' and `Elsie...' stomp along without really going anywhere but on the whole this is a good record.
