The Spanish Bride is in a different class of Georgette Heyer's historical romances. It is one of her few exceptions from her typical regency romance. You walk through the trenches during Napoleonic warfare and watch a young fiery couple fall madly in love with each other and learn to live with this love during a season of hard campagning. This is one of Heyer's best, and I have had the pleasure of most of her work. This story is amazingly detailed and based on a real character Brigade-Major Harry Smith. It does not come across as a stuffy biographical or historical tale, but as a very passionate story of young love in trying times and in a most un-idyllic setting. If you like Heyer, you should love this. If you do not know Heyer, you should give this a try. Enjoy.

For Heyer fans who don't mind a story slower in some parts, but full of real history, adventure and the most beautiful romance story, this is the book to read.

"The Spanish Bride" is my favourite Heyer book. The love story between Harry and Juana is so beautiful - fiery, passionate, heart wrenching and a legacy of strength on by each of them to be admired. The strength that both of them have, in both their love for each other, commitment to promises, commitment to each other and to the situations surrounding them is to be greatly admired, and something to aim high for when one is married oneself.

You'll find yourself entranced and captivated by Harry and Juana's story, with surprise, intrigue and amusment never far around the corner. Marching with them through the Spanish plains, and then through London at the end of the war - tis brill!

Highly recommended, and one to read over, and over again, and never to tire from it.

Based on the true story of Harry and Juana Smith, this is a romance with a difference. If anyone ever doubted the existence of feisty heroines during the Regency period, then Juana is definitely it. Married to Harry at 14, initially through necessity, she follows the drum with him and the story covers the period from just before Badajos through Waterloo.

Having read some of B-M Smith's memoires, I think Heyer has probably put a little gloss on her portrayal of him, but there's little doubt he and his colleagues truly did adore Juana. Heyer has obviously done her research and gives a real flavour of the privations suffered during the wars, particularly those on the Iberian Peninsula. Her descriptions of the battles and their aftermath definitely don't spare the reader's sensibilities. So, if you are not interested in this era of British history, you should probably skip this one.

Personally I loved it, and though it's not a typical romance, I think it's one of Ms. Heyer's best.
