‘Seville may be Spain's fourth-largest city, but it is a place where you can pick oranges from the trees, and see open countryside from the centre of town. Come in spring if you can, when the gardens are drowned in birdsong and the air becomes intoxicating with the scent of jasmine and a hundred other blooms’

It's handy to find a guide that focusses on these three cities without lumping them in with the south coast resorts. I hadn't used a Cadogan guide before and was pleasantly surprised. The book is light and portable - there are smaller guides, but you can still fit this in a small bag.

The text is easy to read and the layout accessible. There are nice colour photos at the front, which I think give a good representation of the region. There are no other pictures though, which is something of a shame. The maps are black and white but quite easy to follow, and cover a wider area than those in some other books.

The practical information is really quite good, even for an independent traveller, with more info on things like public transport than many other guides I tried. There's a general practical A-Z at the start and more specific information for each city. Focussing on just the three cities enables a lot more detail to be packed into a book of the same size as equivalents which cover the whole of Andalucia. However, information is also given on destinations that could be visited as day trips from the cities.

The language guide is another strength, being easy to read and comprehensive, although there are no phonetic spellings so pronunication can be tricky. There's also a handy menu reader, although this is located separately. I found the style of writing accessible and clear.

Overall, this guidebook is well worth looking at if you are visiting any/all of the three featured cities, even as an independent traveller. I would certainly look out for other guides in the same series having found this one so useful.

Excellent Companion to Thicker Guidebooks 10 Jan. 2010
By Xiomara Paredes - Published on
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
We purchased an inexpensive earlier edition of this Andalusia-focused text to accompany the thicker Frommer and Steve's Spain guidebooks and we were pleasantly surprised. The Cadogan guide provides a different point of view, with more historical and cultural comment and much less practical information (i.e. hotel and restaurant reviews). As a thin volume, we carried Cadogan with us, until I foolishly dropped the book from my shoulder bag in Triana (Sevilla) - luckily near the end of our ten-day intinerary through Cordoba, Granada and Sevilla. I wanted to cry! As mentioned, we bought the slightly outdated previous additional for a few dollars, since we were relying on the current other guides to give us the up-to-the-minute practical info. This strategy worked perfectly. I recommend that any traveler to these Andalusian cities, particularly those on a first visit, purchase this guide as a good supplement to the other better-known guidebooks, whether you carry it to Spain, or not.
