I remember seeing this movie on a late night showing on ITV in the late 80's and I got to say it caught my interest. Over the years I taped it on VHS, watched for a few months then taped over it, then taped it again and so on and so on. So in the end I purchased it on DVD and was impressed with the overall content and better picture quality than my old VHS copies. The story is simple one, a guy goes to rescue a bunch of bimbo's for a bunch of money from a bunch of bad guys, makes friends with a teenage girl, through out the movie they fight and eventually bond. The guy meets an old friend, who both sell each other out a few times then remain best of buddies, the bimbos are saved and all ends happily. This movie is like a future version of Mad Max, all the machinery has been repaired a thousand times an things need to be kicked a few times to work. Peter Strauss pulls of a likeable, sarcastic and unusual hero/bountyhunter and Molly plays an excellent teenage girl, full of angst, and both work well together, bonding into loose father and daughter unit. The best part of this movie is the excellently cast Micheal Ironside as Overdog, one of the best movie bad guys of all history. To sum up, a great early 80's movie, dated now but still looks good after all this time. Take a look and see what we were watching in the 80's.

This is underrated... 22 Mar 2006

I'm really surprised at the comments posted here. I can remember catching the tail end of this movie on my father's casually recorded golf tapes and being rooted to the spot, pestering my dad repeatedly, 'What's this, what's this?!' Overdog is undoubtedly one of the sci-fi/fantasy genre's great villains, and the unlikely pairing of the man and the girl (who, thankfully, never actually get romantically involved) is well handled. The machines and sets are atmospheric especially Overdog's lair. But please, don't buy it thinking that the title promises space battles cos you're in for a big disappointment. Buy it for its weirdness and its atmosphere instead. Having said which - why is this only available in Region 1?? Fave moments - 'I lied!!!' and the bit where the chemist salivates over Overdog's fascinating skin diseases. (And why the hell was it called Space Hunter??)

This is one of those films that gets overlooked and is not available in retail stores, very rarely shown on TV and on verge of cult status due to originaly being filmed in 3D in the 80's.

Not as advertised
I bought this film thinking that it was in 3-D,but it was not like films like Spy-Kids 3D where the film has to be made for the special glasses. Read more

One villain, two heroines, three bimbos & some trick glasses
Molly Ringwald, playing feisty red-head. The real heroine they saved for the prequel, and then never made it - shame, really. I'd sure watch it. Read more

Michael Ironside is a God - shame about the film...
To be honest, this rating is a compromise between the 5 stars Michael Ironside gets for eating the scenery, cast, crew and lights in so spectacular a fashion and the single star... Read more
