I bought this because it's one of the few UK-produced titles to reflect a lesbian-parented family, and I do really like the way in which the family set-up is entirely incidental to the plot line (plus I love the illustration where Spacegirl and her mummies are all ill in bed together with all their various books/gadgets/cat etc. around them - very funny). But I find all that puking a bit much, especially given the extremely brightly coloured illustrations. It also seems to try just a bit too hard to be all-inclusively PC in terms of the people illustrated - it feels a bit like the illustrator has been ticking off a list of stereotypes/categories to include. This wasn't quite the book that I had hoped it would be, but I'm sure that my now-2-year-old will absolutely love it when he gets more into bodily humour.

Edited to add: I've now increased my rating to 4-stars, as my son (almost 3 yrs old now) thinks that the puking is absolutely hilarious, and his laughter is so infectious that you can't help but laugh along with him. I still find the illustrations scarily bright though!

This is a really fun book for younger children, a mixture of space fantasy and the more prosaic reality of family life. Illustrations are really vibrant with some nice subtle touches that make it rewarding for the reading parent as well as the child. It flags up the diversity of families without being heavy going or issue-based. It would be a shame if this was pigeon-holed in any way because it's just a quality children's book and I would definitely recommend it and will look out for follow-ups.

A great book! 16 Oct 2007
Format:Paperback
We bought this book for our sons aged 2 and 4 and they both absolutely love it - being sick and space rockets - what more could a boy ask for! What I particularly like about the book is that it is a story that includes a family with two mums, but doesn't at any point say 'this family has two mums', it's just a natural part of the story. It was so nice for our sons to see their own family reflected without it being 'an issue'. I can't praise this book highly enough.
