2.0 out of 5 stars Empty Promises, 7 Sep 2007
Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars
When I first saw this game I was cautiously optimistic, as it was only 15 quid I didn't think I could go wrong.

I should have downloaded the demo first.

Austrian developers Provox (I've not heard of them either) seem to have taken the patching idea to the extreem, and have handed over what feels like half a game. I've not managed to play for more then 10 minutes without something going wrong and having to restart (which isnt that straightforward either). I wouldnt mind if they could fix these problems, but I'm yet to find a patch anywhere.

Even if it was finished, the game has missed the mark. I feel like a backseat passenger dispite being at the helm; with weapons that lack any description, side quests that often don't make sense (accepting a mission for one race that seemingly askes you to destroy one of their own ships) and a lack of ships. 40 ships? Yes but not all playable, which is what we are interested in. Its 14 playable, spread amoung 9 races, and as with many games of this genre each species tends to mimic the other. One species interceptor is similar to anothers. Theres only really 3 ships: Light, medium and heavy fighters, so you'll just work up to heavy and find its very tough but not much different from the ship you started with.

In summary: I wish developers would look at the products they are up against and then try to beat them. Very similar games include: Freelancer which is 20 times the game this is, darkstar one which is mediocre but still better and Independance war 2: Edge of Chaos - marginally better. Please download the demo and decide if this is what you want first.

2.0 out of 5 stars So close ..., 24 Jun 2007
Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
'Space Opera' games were once the bread and butter of the gaming world. These days strong, big budget offerings are pretty rare. Spaceforce:Rogue Universe promises much but isn't quite ready yet with at least one show-stopping bug.

It boasts excellent graphics and tremendously broad gameplay options; freeform or storyline driven. Similar to some of the earliest 'greats' of the genre (e.g. Elite, showing my age I know!) it offers a wide range of activities including trading, diplomacy and of course combat. You can choose from nearly a dozen different races, ten different classes and 14 ships ... and that's just to start with. As you progress you'll be able to trade and fight your way to upgrades, new ships and new friends/enemies. So far it sounds great however there's a catch. Spaceflight with it's freeform, realtime movement in true 3 dimensions really needs a joystick (you can just use a mouse and keyboard but it's really quite painful). Alas, the final release version of the game (bought from Amazon of course) has a bug that essentially makes joystick use impossible with what appears to be vast majority of joystick makes. In fact a quick visit to the long thread on the publisher's support site shows only one model of one make of joystick working - for everyone else you have to disable before playing.

Once they fix this then I'd not hestitate giving it 4* or more. About time the space opera returned!

I'm a big fan of this genre, but this game sucks. It's not a patch on either Freelancer or X3 Reunoin. The instructions that come with the game are non existant, the plot is poor, the breath of ships and missions is also poor, the graphics are average.
