Product Description

CALIGULA OF THE STARS.

Though he was later accused of every crime and sexual perversion in the galaxy, Hope Hubris began as an innocent. Because he defended his older sister against the violent lusts of a wealthy scion, Hope and his peasant family were forced to flee Callisto, one of the moons of Jupiter. Pursued by the bloodthirsty scions across the airless desert, they barely escaped with their lives. The illegal space bubble was overcrowded with refugees, all hoping to reach Jupiter for asylum.

But the space travelers had not reckoned on the terrible threat of high space-the pirates, barbaric men who rape, rob, and murder, with no thought but to satisfy their bestial appetites. It will take all Hope's ingenuity to survive, but the atrocities he witnesses will never die. There is only one way he can be rid of them . . .

'Refugee: Bio of a Space Tyrant' is the first book in a series of five (is that a quintology?). The Bio of a Space Tyrant books are Refugee, Mercenary,Polatician,Executive and Statesman. This is a review of just the first book so I will concentrate on that.
The refugee in question is Hope Hubris, known throughout the solar system as 'The Tyrant of Jupiter', however, this book is written in the first person in a time before that title was given to him.
The story starts with a teenage boy upsetting the local aristocracy on Calisto to such a degree that he and all his family is forced to flee the moon in a makeshift spaceship and seek a better home elsewhere in the solar system.
During his journey, Hope experiences many new things such as rape,murder and piracy and through desperation he is forced to partake in canabalism and yet depite all these obsticles he survives to tell his tale in this, his biography.
As a fan of sci-fi but with little scientific knowledge this book was a perfect blend of science with layman explanations. After reading this book I lent it to my girlfriend who has never read a sci-fi book before and she loved it for it's story of triumph over adversity (oh yeah and there is a romantic theme in there too). So whatever your pleasure this book will satisfy, but be warned once you've read the first book you will want to read the next and the next and the next.

I haven't read that much sci-fi (apart from Hyperion and Ender's Game which I both enjoyed) but I thought that Bio of a Space Tyrant Vol 1. Refugee was really good. It has a very good story with strong characters in a believable (yet dark) world. The main character can be at times slightly peculiar and even somewhat depraved (hence my immediate connection with him [joke]) but not deliberately so nor in an overt way. He's merely a young, teenage boy who has become a victim of circumstances like any refugee is. He, and others, are merely trying to survive the increasingly desperate situations they find themselves in as they try to find a better life in the cold, dark, bleak, emptiness of space.

The thing is though the book is not for the faint-hearted/soft who prefer simple stories with black and white characters and no pushed boundaries. It's dark. If you wrote down every disgusting/illegal thing you could think of (rape, child murder etc) you would see about 90% of it in the book in various forms. I'm not exaggerating (strangely there are no rude words in it due to the autobiographic nature of the story). I don't think this is a negative aspect of the book though, far from it. I felt that none of it was gratuitous. The darkness/depravity existed for a purpose 1. to show the ordeal the main characters and the refugees had to go through/how they suffered and 2. to tell you the origin story/early years of the man who would come to be known as the Space Tyrant (and with a name like that you can't expect a typical life).

If you've read something like George R. R. Martin or read about refugee camps or even ever just read the news then this book won't necessarily shock you. It's not dark for the sake of being dark like I said. If you can get over that then you should thoroughly enjoy the book. I did and I'm now reading Mercenary (the next in the series) which is even better (yet far less dark).

This book was a good start to Piers Anthony's writing. I intend to read more on this theme. I hope the rest of his books are as good.

At times like this I wondered whether I believed in God. Surely God was not like the booted man, heedless of human welfare or merit. But if He were not, then what was He like? If He had decreed, after due consideration, that sixty men and twenty-five women should die while trying to do the right thing, while brute pirates prospered, what kind of a Deity was He? "e;

Thats another phenomenon that has perplexed me. The mechanism by which a few uninhibited individuals can cow a much larger number, when both groups know the larger group has the power to prevail. It seems impossible, yet it happens all the time. Whole governments exist in opposition to the will of the people they govern, because of this. "e;

leadership exists largely with the consent of the followers, and that compromise is essential, and that the true will of the majority must always be taken seriously. "e;
