SCOURGE OF THE ECLIPTIC

He was driven by violent injustice from his home moon of Callisto—and set forth to claim the epic destiny that would blaze across worlds and time. He saw his family destroyed, his sister carried off into sexual slavery, his beautiful lover killed—and he swore revenge against the murderous pirates who held the Jupiter planetoids in a stranglehold of terror.

Fired by raw courage, steeled by young might, he rose in the Navy of Jupiter to command a personal squadron loyal to the death. And it was death they faced—against piratical warlords of the Jupiter Elliptic who laughed at the young commander’s challenge… until they met the merciless fury of the warrior who would annihilate all obstacles in his path to immortal renown as the

Though a sequel to `Refugee' this book is quite different in many ways. Plotwise it's essentially the start of Hope's quest to extirpate piracy and his means/ways to do this (with QYV playing a part as well). A big difference from `Refugee' however is that there is more of a focus on Hope's friendships (as opposed to his family bonds) which is a welcome change. Probably the best thing about this book is that the other main characters, Hope's crew, are all very distinct and each have their own lives/personalities. They're not just plot devices like in some books. They don't simply have their moment and disappear; they are a continual part of the story. They exist in this book not only for a reason related to the story but also for their own personal reasons as they each have their own quirks/issues/desires/personalities/relationship with Hope which really helps bring each of these characters to life.

Another interesting aspect of this book is that there is less exposition than the 1st one had, especially in the 1st part of it. In the 1st book, Piers Anthony did go into quite a bit of detail about some aspects of the journey/life in space which did could at times be a bit too much information. This was never an issue for me while reading it though. It was the 1st book in the series and also because the series is part of the Sci-Fi genre. A Fantasy book doesn't have to deal with this. You don't need to explain how a wagon works to the reader but something like a gravity lens will need some backstory/explanation behind it. The exposition is there at times in the 2nd book but it's definitely less obtrusive than it was in the 1st book which is again another pleasant surprise.

Though it is slightly toned down from the previous book (it would be difficult to increase it), the sex, violence and depravity are still present this time round. Again none of it's particularly gratuitous but one plot point quite late in the book is very strange/amusing to behold/somewhat disturbing. The influence behind it seems to be from similar customs that were held in Italy and the Baltics (and other places) and it is interesting to learn more of the pirate `culture' through it. There's a real juxtaposition of a dark necessity/role played out as if it were a game and then culminating in something character defining/disturbing (you see a preview of where the Caligula title may originate from). It was very unusual that the book could take me from shock to amusement to shock again, all in the same chapter, and this kind of writing is one of the reasons I'm enjoying the Space Tyrant series and finding it so compelling to read.

So if you enjoyed the 1st book then there's no reason not to enjoy this book. It improves on the 1st in ways that you might not have noticed while still managing to tell a strong and compelling story with some great characters.

I would have really liked this, except... 31 Aug 2011

The first book in this series began with such a promising voice, almost like
Confessions of Felix Krull or something. Very cool, and I thought I was on to
something really great. I was looking forward to the second book, but the voice
fell apart a very short way into it. And what the hell is this writer's obsession
with rape? The rape of young women by older men, no less? Lots and lots of rape.
Bizarre, and not very titillating reading, even for those of you into that sort of thing.
He gets so "rapey" in the second book that I struggled to finish the
second half, and I certainly won't be reading the third installment.

Could have really been a great series, but the writer blew it

This is an amazing series! 10 Feb 2012

I read these books twenty years ago, and loved them. They are amazing. You will not find a more epic and gratifying space fleet battle than you get in this series, not to mention the lot of them are just spectacular escapist reading from the standpoint of following a story from beginning to end. It's fabulous plotting and brilliant execution.

If I am perfectly candid, I will even confess to seeing this book sitting on the Amazon list with only three reviews for the last few weeks (as of 2/9/12 anyway), and thinking, "Hah hah!" ... because I have a book out right now and am trying to sell "against it." But I can't stand letting this book, this amazing series, sit here and look bad on this list based on three reviews. This Amazon review system is too fickle at times, too random. This series looking poor is just insane. This series helped transform science fiction from the amazing but often stilted thing it was during the early 20th century to everything you see today. Piers Anthony gave us permission to bend rules that everyone thought were already being bent enough.

This is a great series. Read it. All of them. It's an amazing journey.

This is a great sequel to Piers' first book. There is no doubt that Anthony can write Sci-Fi as well as fantasy. This book is full of battles and strategy. It is enjoyable from the first read to the end.

Honor is an intangible concept, based more on appearance than reality, but its fundament is based on reality, and to a considerable extent it fashions its own reality. Civilization is a function of the honor of the human species. You must master the nuances of honor, to know personally what input will bring about what output. "e;
