Product Description

Review

Richard's voice is as calm , airy, warm and literate as ever; Angus Stevenson's lovingly-teased twelve-string guitar chimes with a sound like musical sunshine and the whole band play with an almost effortless confidence that only a band with nothing to prove can muster... in their own secluded and timeless pop world they remain kings --Nightshift magazine, June 2009

CD Description

Known as the godfathers of Oxford rock the Relationships are purveyors of tweedy pyschedelia, with masterly tunes and lyrics by Richard Ramage, formerly of the Anyways. Having released albums on Twee Kitten of California and Trailer Star from Nottingham, England, the band are proud to come home to Oxford label Big Red Sky for their third album, Space.

4.0 out of 5 stars Now thats what I call music!!!!, 9 Jul 2009

(REAL NAME)
What year is it? 1967? 1972? Apparently a couple of these guys were in Here Comes Everybody, a legendary mid-80s band who also featured one of Talulah Gosh/Heavenly, and inspired Andy Bell (now of Oasis) to buy a guitar and form Ride. But don't expect shambling indie or shoegazing music. They've clearly been listening to a lot of late 60s/early 70s stuff, particularly Barrett-era Pink Floyd and some of the original "School of Prog" bands (they name-check Watcher of the Skies at one point, and do some funny time-signatures to stop you dancing)... but they've got a twist on that heady era which is all their own. Victorian Seance has some very Duane Eddy twangy guitar on it, while telling the story of, yes, a Victorian séance, complete with candlelit heiresses and Egyptian reincarnation themes. It reminds me of the Clash's London Calling gone wrong (but in a good way). Her Constituency is a lush tribute to a mysterious woman who seems to be coming back to port, like a ship returning from the New World, Clockwork Toy sounds like a psychedelic episode of Trumpton (but with clockwork figures not puppets) over a jangly airy backing, and Living in a House with Brian Jones is about, well, sharing a house with everyone's favourite dead Rolling Stone ("burning something aromatic, checks his jacket in the looking glass"). But it's not all toy-town psych and cups of tea on hallucinatory croquet lawns... Grace has a mutant-funk-meets-the Velvet-Underground feel to it, and Soft Rock Canyon features a mellow West Coast vibe, with the LA beads and bandanas scene driving their jeeps under the stars. Album closer The Eternal Colonel is my favourite, with plenty of acid-folk, raga-style guitar - and a phased drum solo which hints at at those cheeky partygoers the Small Faces... but the Relationships live in a more stately, less gorblimey version of Itchycoo Park. The playing is great throughout, with sparkling guitars and sparky drumming, and some neat understated keyboards, while the singing is rich and packed with Byrdsy harmonies... not to mention the voice-over on title track Space Race ("HMS Britannia soars skywards" - you guys!). Psychedelic poetry in motion!
