The year is 3300. A powerful race of combat robots, known only as the Dominators, has swept through our galaxy, leaving chaos and ruin in its wake. Five humanoid races have set their differences aside and joined in a coalition to protect themselves from this deadly menace. All hopes now lie with an assembly of defiant space rangers, charged with the task of neutralizing the alien threat.
This terrible burden now falls upon your shoulders as you take up the mantle of a space ranger. After selecting a character from any race in the coalition and equipping your ship with the necessary apparatus, you are thrown into an unparalleled gaming world, overflowing with entertaining flourishes and shocking revelations. Engage in any number of activities: fight in the unfathomable depths of hyperspace, buy and sell exotic goods, perform dangerous government errands, and of course, liberate planets from the Dominators in real-time-strategy battles; a fully-3D game in itself!
The fate of the galaxy is in the balance. All depends on your actions as a space ranger and their effect on the rich variety of characters you meet within the game. Fun:
First of all, let me tell you people that us Europeans should not be led astray by the description of the American version of SR2:Reboot. Whereas the american version was a simple expansion pack to Space Rangers 2 (Which is extremely hard to find in Europe), this European version is actually a box set of Space Rangers 1, Space Rangers 2 AND the expansion pack. Now that's pretty good as far as value is concerned (Despite both SR 1 and 2 being pretty much the same with few differences). Now that I've got that clear, let me talk about the game.
If you've played Sid Meier's Pirates with an emphasis on trading goods from island to island, you'll be right at home with Space Rangers 2, but that's not the only thing you can do. You can take on missions to transport goods to planets on the other side of the universe, or just simply meander around the galaxy and (In the case of SR2) help other ships take down the constant threat of the hostile machines known as the Dominators.
Now, despite the praise that I'm giving this game, and as much as it deserves it, that's not to say it's perfect. I took away one star from the overall rating due to a few flaws. The RTS sections in SR2 are pretty mediocre and shallow when compared to other RTS games, the top-down-shooter sections in SR1 are irritating if you don't have a strong enough ship on you, the text-adventure sections are laughable due to the huge emphasis on hoping you got the right choice along with some awfully vague puzzles, but despite these flaws, you shouldn't let these flaws get in the way of this enjoyably addictive, super-fun Han Solo-'em-up which, even on Windows XP pcs like mine which buckle under the pressure of games like Medieval II, Mass Effect and Black and White 2, still manages to run as smooth as ever!
By all means, recommended!

Fun:
This is a great game, as described by critics and customers alike. Still this version, the Excalibur Publishing version, contains Starforce copy protection software. It seems the only way to play Space Rangers 2(+reboot expansion) without Starforce is to get the digital download version from a site like Impulse. I mention all this as nowhere on the game packaging, or on the Excalibur site does it clearly mention that you will be installing Starforce when you install this game. If you decide to use it look around on the internet for the starforce removal tools etc for when you have finished with the game.
If it didn't have this DRM i'd have given this version the full 5 out of 5.
EDIT UPDATED:
My mistake as there is no Starforce(or any other nasty DRM) on this retail version. So if you haven't yet played it, and don't want the hassle of using Steam or Impulse, then this is the best version around with no possible danger to your hardware or system. It really is an excellent and unique game, one for the collection.
If it didn't have this DRM i'd have given this version the full 5 out of 5.
