4.0 out of 5 stars Sci-Fi Influenced Progressive Metal, 8 Sep 2002
This review is from: Space Metal (Audio CD)
Star One...or Ayreon, whatever u call him Arjen Lucassen has made progressive concept pieces his reason to live, and in Space Metal he has followed up the relatively mellow (compared to this) Ambeon project with a progressive metal effort influenced by Sci-Fi films (inc Alien, Dune etc) and succeeds once again in bringing a host of vocalists and musicians together to record an immaculately produced album full of...Space Metal - Very heavy guitars, a back drop of keyboards (including the always welcome mellotron) and a chunky throbbing ryhthme section, turn it up and let your ears bleed....highlights included Perfect Survivor (cause Alien rocks) with its use of low range vocalist Dan Swano for the verses and soaring operatics of Damian Wilson for the choruses, opener Set Your Controls sets the tone early with deep metal riffing and complex keyboard work. Not to be taken too seriously (lets face it prog metal sci fi concept..one of the tracks is called Intergalactic Space Crusader!!! - cheesey as hell) but highly enjoyable and highly recommended....just make sure your air guitars handy....your gonna need it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Also look out for....., 4 Oct 2003

This review is from: Space Metal (Audio CD)
Arjen Anthony Lucassen's latest project - the title "Space Metal" tells it all - combines his simply superb guitar work with some excellent vocalists, most notably Damian Wilson (whose own "Cosmas" album deserves five-star ratings). Hi fi buffs will also enjoy the superlative production quality of this CD.

One point to note, though, is that "Space Metal" was first released as a limited-issue 2-CD set. The second CD contains a breathtaking nine-minute "Hawkwind Medley" - the combination of Lucassen's guitar work with guest vocals by Dave Brock is awesome. So look out for the 2-CD set if you can find one....

4.0 out of 5 stars Space Metal and Spot the Film Title, 22 July 2003

Certainly different from earlier Ayreon projects, but no less enjoyable and unmistakeably a Lucassen project. Reminiscent in places to his Dream Sequencer project (as Ayreon) and continues the theme of space. If you like sci-fi as well as well-executed rock music, there is the bonus of spotting the film references.
