Dead Space is a feature length horror/sci-fi animated movie based on the much anticipated Electronic Arts video game set for release in the fall of 2008. When a deep space mining operation discovers a mysterious alien Marker, some believe they have finally found evidence of our creators. However, the removal of the Marker instead unleashes a horrific alien species, which had been entombed within a remote planet, and a desperate fight for survival ensues. The story follows a select group of miners and crew members, as they confront a grotesque and lethal invasion unlike anything ever seen before. The Dead Space animation will serve as a prequel to the game, and take adult animated horror to a whole new level.

I recently bought Dead Space on Xbox 360 (great game BTW) and decided to get this to give me some background on the story. That's exactly what it did! The story acts as a prequel to the game and explains how things came to be, right up to the point were you arrive at the ship in the game. I'm not really an anime fan so at first I wasn't too impressed with the way it looked, but it did grow on me as time went on. As a Blu Ray disc I'm giving it 4*, some of it looked amazing, other parts pretty ordinary.

If you own or are planning to buy Dead Space the game then I recommend it, similarly if your an anime fan I think you'll enjoy it. If your not buying the game or not into anime then I wouldn't bother.

PS - I also recommend downloading the animated comics from xbox live as they add a lot to the story. They are esentially a prequel to the prequel and explain a lot!

I bought this to fill in the back story of events that happen before the game begins and it does just that. In saying this though, you can work out the details for yourself if you apply a little bit of brain power and listen/watch out for the clues in the game provided by the audio and video logs.

I would warn anyone thinking about getting this if you haven't played the game, there is a major plot spolier that is casually revealed during the film that you don't find out until about 75% of the way through the game. There is also an inconsistency with the weaponry used in the film compared to the game - I don't this this is simply an equipment difference between the two ships. I reckon it might be down to the animators for the film mis-interperating the descriptions of the mining tools that your game character uses.

I've seen a few criticisims of the animation quality on other reviews, its certainly not Pixar quality but its adequate for the task and I think that you can say the same about the film as a whole. It gets the job done, not a classic by any means but good enough and I'm not sure if it gains anything by opting for Blu Ray over DVD - I give it a B+.

Off the bat let me just say that i am a big Dead Space fan, and as of the time of this writing there have been 3 main Dead Space games, quite a few side games and additional pieces of content, and also a few comics and novels, not to mention 2 movies. The reason I mention this is because I want you to be aware that the Dead Space universe is massive and extends far beyond just monsters in space. Now, as a stand alone experience this movie is an OK flick; it's a very self contained story that asks nothing of the viewer except to sit back and enjoy it. It provides enough details so that you don't need to know anything about the movie before watching it. And it even wraps up nicely and doesn't rob the viewer of any closure. As a part of the Dead Space lore, it fills in some information gaps that are not essential to know but add an extra visual depth to what happened on Aegis 7 and the USG: Ishimura before the first Dead Space game.

Now, if you are interested in the Dead Space universe beyond this movie, I would say that this is definitely worth checking out. It takes place toward the end of the Dead Space comic series, starting around the point where the Marker has been found and has been moved to the USG:Ishimura, and finishing just as the USG:Kellion is approaching the USG:Ishimura, which fans of the games will recognize as the start of the first Dead Space game. The story is primarily concerned with those at the head of the USG: Ishimura, specifically Captain Mathius, as well as the secuirty team onboard the Ishimura. The story is focussed on the discovery and containment of what is happening.

Dead Space downfall acts as a prequel to the computer game Dead Space (PS3) Dead Space (Xbox 360) Dead Space (PC) and acts as an interesting run up to the start of the game.
(the Wii game Dead Space: Extraction (Wii) is a different story line)

It wont suprise anyone who has played the game that this film is a gore fest and as its 18 certificate testifys not 1 for the kids!

The Animation isn't to the highest standard but isn't to shabby. The voice overs aren't particually well acted and at times you get the feeling that some expletives weren't needed and crow-barred in as they seem out of place and unecessary. Its almost as if they were deliberatley pushing for the 18 certificate to bring it in line with the certificate on the game itself. The Audio and video content are good but not stunning for a blu ray release. I own a few Anime movies on blu ray that look superior to this one.

I also feel that to non gamers it may leave them feeling a bit empty at the end as the story stops and the game would commence. For the gamers it gives some interesting background but as the game itself has been out for a while across 360,Ps3 and PC platforms I guess it may be the case like myself you played it a while back and the story feels a bit detached now.

Never the less the price is not too bad for 1 hour 15 minute manga movie and overall i did enjoy it and thought it was ok
