Product Description

Product Description

Splendor is a fast-paced and addictive game of chip-collecting and card development. Players are merchants of the Renaissance trying to buy gem mines, means of transportation, shops - all in order to acquire the most prestige points. If you're wealthy enough, you might even receive a visit from a noble at some point, which of course will further increase your prestige. On your turn, you may (1) collect chips (gems), or (2) buy and build a card, or (3) reserve one card. If you collect chips, you take either three different kinds of chips or two chips of the same kind. If you buy a card, you pay its price in chips and add it to your playing area. To reserve a card - in order to make sure you get it, or, why not, your opponents don't get it - you place it in front of you face down for later building; this costs you a round, but you also get gold in the form of a joker chip, which you can use as any gem. All of the cards you buy increase your wealth as they give you a permanent gem bonus for later buys; some of the cards also give you prestige points. In order to win the game, you must reach 15 prestige points before your opponents do.

Splendor

  • Splendor can be explained in five minutes and can play in half an hour, works with two players just as well as with three or four.
  • In Splendor, you lead a merchant guild. Using tokens representing gemstones, you will acquire developments which produce new gems (bonuses). These bonuses reduce the cost of your purchases and attract noble patrons.
  • Each turn is quick: one, and only one, action! The first player to reach fifteen prestige points by accumulating nobles and development triggers the end of the game.

I was introduced to Splendor by a pretty hardcore board gaming friend of mine. I turned up at his house to see a pile of cards and some chips and wasn't expecting too much yet this turned out to be a surprisingly fun game that although easy to learn supplies a nice variety of directions to play.

The goal of the game is to win by getting the most points by collecting cards. During your turn you have several possible actions -

- Collect chips. These are poker chips with stickers of gems matching the colour of the chip, these represent the currency required to buy cards which are gem mines.

- Reserve a card. This allows you to hold onto a card you are collecting chips to buy but can't yet afford preventing another player purchasing it, each player can hold three.

- Buy and build a card. If you reach the chips needed to purchase a card you can use a turn to place it in front of your tableau.

The game is more complicated then that, each card also produces a gem currency of the mine it represents which permanently sits in your currency pool, so if you buy two ruby cards, the cost of the ruby currency will always require two less to purchase, this is a permenant boost.

This allows for the option to buy cheap cards quickly to boost your currency resources requiring far less chip collecting, doubly good as chips are a finite resource players can hoard. On the flip side these low level cards are rarely worth any points, many of them literally worth nothing which won't let you win where as hoarding chips to go for very expensive cards can be riskier but they are worth far more so the pay off is often worth it.

I've only played this 2-player thus far, and it's utterly delicious. The whole build-your-buying-power mechanic, using wonderfully physical jewel-faced poker chips as currency, is immensely satisfying. It's also enjoyable in that everyone has the same information. There is randomness about which new cards are revealed to replace old ones as they're bought, but you can see what everybody has, there's no hidden information, and figuring out what each other player wants and how to maximise your own options and scupper theirs, is a bit like figuring out a puzzle every turn. Admittedly this *can* lead to analysis paralysis if you're dealing with a chronically anxious OCD sufferer who freezes up about optimising their strategy, and the game accelerates a bit madly in the last few turns until someone goes, "Oh, hang on, I think I just won," but then like any game, it's not for everyone.
Interesting decisions, conflicting goals, a degree of player interaction, tight mechanics and glorious presentation. Oh, and the components all fit in the box and STAY WHERE THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO.

Cant stop playing this game it's very addictive! We really like it and so do our teenage children. It's really all about planning ahead so you dont waste a move. It involves set collection of different gems which in turn earn you bonuses that you can use straight away. Gives your brain a really good work out. Simple to learn and simple to teach. Well made t componements. Your very much playing for yourself and rushing to collect 15 points before the others. It's different to a lot of games. Playing time is about half hour or maybe a bit more. Very quick to set up and put away. You can almost start playing within a couple of minutes. Several different strategies can be applied but no clear way is the best to win which keeps the game fresh and interesting. We play loads of games but i think this one will be off the shelf pretty often. Infact since we purchased it it hasn't made the shelf as it hasn't left the table!

Best described as a filler game, Splendor is extremely easy to learn and has very strong replay value. The flimsy gem dealer narrative is unimportant and is disregarded after a few games as the simple but highly effective gameplay mechanic and fluid turn structure are the most important aspects of this games playability. Turns are fast and smooth, no rule discrepancies can occur and no arguments will ever erupt, although the odd "grr" or sigh will be expressed. Splendor plays perfectly well with 2 players but is most fun with 3 or 4. The hardware in the box is beautifully crafted and presented and quality oozes from the two components on show- hard wearing, attractive glossy cards and perfectly weighted and tactile poker style chips. In my opinion this is a must have (filler) game for any board game geek but will equally entertain casual gamers and families of all ages for a long, long time.

Buy it! This is a fantastic game with super components. You purchase jewels, reserve cards and buy mines etc that produce you more jewels. Eventually your riches help you attract patronage from a wealthy member of the nobility! First person to 15 points wins. This can be learnt and played within 45mins - games are pacey and different every time. We've played it more than any other game recently.

Beautifully made, excellent game mechanic. The game is relatively simple to learn with what amounts to a page of rules. However the more you play the more you realise how much the game has to offer. Splendor is a fantastic little game that has many many hours of replay value.
