The ultimate Star Blazers model kit 11 Jun. 2011
By Bryan K. - Published on Amazon.com
Verified Purchase Durability:    Educational:    Fun:
Bandai has really outdone themselves with this kit. Over 20 inches from bow to stern, moving parts, colored plastic...etc. Despite the incredible amount of very small pieces, every single one is snap-together, so you don't need an ounce of super glue. The plastic is very durable, and the colors match those of the Argo (Yamato) on the tv show. And not one waterslide decal! In fact, the whole kit only has 3 metallic stickers: one on the display stand, and two small metallic strips that go inside the bridge tower behind the clear parts to make them really stand out. The little fighters dont come pre colored, but theyre so small that it doesn't really matter. The three main guns are very impressive. As you rotate the base of the turret, each of the three barrels moves up one at a time all by themselves, just like on the show. They have special internal components that make them work. I wouldn't recommend this model for little kids; after all, if they're little kids, they don't even know what Star Blazers is, but more importantly, there are a LOT of little tiny pieces, and it took me around 5 hours to put the whole thing together. But when it's done, there's nothing else like it. It may seem a bit pricy, but that's because of the quality you're getting, plus the peace of mind that comes with buying through amazon. Also, this model isn' availiable in stores anywhere except Japan, so you won't find this at Hobby Lobby. If you're a big Star Blazers fan, and you find yourself looking at this model, then I suggest you buy it.

Review Space Battleship Yamato 1/500 Scale 15 Mar. 2012
By WaveRider - Published on Amazon.com
Verified Purchase Durability:    Educational:    Fun:
The kit is highly detailed as it is an imported Japanese model plastic kit in the 1/500 scale. As such is not a toy and should not be played with by younger admirers of the cartoon or movie, as pieces may easily get broken or mishandled. It is very light since it is a plastic model kit. However, the kit and the box are quite large and truly meant for Space Battleship Yamato enthusiasts. To really get the "battle-tested" look, patience must be applied when assembling and painting this kit. The stock colors of the base pieces are grey and red but may require painting if and when a modeler wants that "authentic" look from the movie or cartoons. It was a real joy to put this kit together and watch as it was constructed to its final form. I am definitely happy with the purchase.

NOT as big as the 2013 release! 2 July 2014
By P. Edward Smith - Published on Amazon.com

That very favorable review of this kit was written back in 2011 when this kit first came out and before the release of the 2013 kit by Bandai.
I originally purchased this kit by mistake thinking it was the one that was released in 2013, but the kits are very different from each other.
The confusion between this kit and the bigger better one needs to be addressed though because BOTH kits claim to be the same scale (1/500) but they ARE NOT!
The newer, BIGGER and BETTER kit can be identified by the artwork on the box. Look for the one with the Cosmo Zeros flying in and around the Yamato on the cover.
The explanation of size difference I've been able to find is that the kit released in 2013 was to coincide with the newly made retelling of the cartoon/Anime' Star-blazers Adventures. Bandai went back and re-examined the ships dimensions and determined that it should be much bigger.
So, while both kits claim to be 1/500 scale, THIS kit is a little more than 8 inches shorter than the kit released in 2013 and half as big around!
When compared to the other later kit, it just doesn't make sense to purchase this one, unless of course you can't find the better, later release. If you want an all around better and BIGGER Yamato, this is not the kit for you!
ALSO:There is a mistake that keeps being made by reviewers of Bandai Kits. The mistake is in referring to these kits from Bandai as "Snap Together". Snap together kits are made in such a way that the parts lock together when assembled and are not meant to come apart again. Bandai's Kits however are made SO WELL that they can be "Press Fit" together in most cases. "Press Fit" allows for the kit to be taken apart again at a later time if desired but there ARE parts that will need to be glued if a permanent fixture is desired. "Snap Together" implies a cheapness to these Bandai Kits that simply doesn't exist!

THIS IS NOT YOUR FATHERS YAMATO!! 23 Jun. 2013

This thing is so Impressive its daunting!! Its a perfect size.. not too small and not too big!! But this is not a beginner model!! You have to think this one thru when your putting it together. If you want it to look as good as it does on the packaging!! put some time into it get an airbrush and do it right its totally worth it!! The pacakging is very nice with a cut out backdrop of a planet or something that you could probably set behind your model when you want to display it. Their are a ton of parts so this is not something thats going to take you a couple of hours and your done!! Take your time with this one . spread it out.. enjoy it!! its going to look awesome when your done with it!!
Beautiful Model 27 Oct. 2014

This is a beautiful kit and is worthy of 5 stars. It is easy to assemble and looks great. Lighting, with some creativity, is also possible and makes this a stand out kit. This kit is around 53cm long. One note, while an outstanding model in its own right, this is not the current release of the 1/500 Space Battleship Yamato. This model was released around 2011. The current Bandai rendering is 66cm long and is much more detailed. It also costs more. The current kit is somewhere between a 1/500 and 1/350 scale. I have compared it to 1/350 US ships of similar size. That being said, I can recommend this kit.
