24 episodes of the first series here, all have been superbly digitally restored which makes this 1975 series even better, some interesting extras on disc 7 as well ,including the 'Clapperboard' Gerry Anderson specials.Well done Network DVD on this release, let's hope that you will do the same on Series two.An excellent purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Impressed... 1 Nov 2010
Format:Blu-ray
Having previously bought this series as the Region 1 Megaset, I was looking forward to seeing what they could do with a hi-res restored print on blu ray.

I've just watched the first disc of this and want to say that I'm very impressed indeed. It looks like they've been able to go back to the original film stock for the restoration. Up to now, we've only been able to view the series from the original telecine transfers, (done at 1970's TV resolution). Thankfully they didn't try to make this wide-screen. The episodes retain the original 4:3 aspect.

This new HD transfer has exceeded my expectations. Genuinely, this show has never looked this good. The picture quality is almost contemporary and shows how good the miniature shots were back in the day. Some of the effects look a bit dated but the model shots clearly show, (in much the same way as in classics like 2001) that CGI still has some way to go.

I suspect a lot of hard work went into this and it shows.

This is absolutely 1st class. The picture and sound quality will astonish you! The work that Network have done in terms of restoration and remastering (both on this and on the previous DVD release) is amazing!

SPACE:1999 remains one of the most controversial science fiction/fantasy series ever created... & I love it!

I can only hope that Network decide to release Year 2 and take the same amount of care over the restoration process that they have with Year 1 (you never know, we might even get to own "Message From Moonbase Alpha" - the definitive ending to the Alphan's long journey - & very moving it is too).

Buy this set, the presentation is lavish and the series itself contains some of the most beautiful, thought provoking & out and out horrific episodes of the series. Highlights include: "Breakaway" (surely the most involving, stunning TV Series pilot ever filmed?), "Another Time, Another Place", "The Guardian of Piri", "Collision Cource", "End of Eternity" (memorable for Peter Bowles of "To The Manor Born" playing a psychotic, immortal who delights in "the exquisite forces of pain and suffering!" and the sequence where Mike Baxter "kills" John Koenig by bludgeoning him to death with a metal bi-plane - not for the faint hearted!) "War Games" and the mind bogglingly scary and atmospheric "Dragon's Domain".

Even today, this is ground-breaking television on every level as the writers and actors go against every expectation and break every rule to create a series that truly stands on it's own.

SPECIAL FEATURES OF NOTE: Several but the massively expanded "These Episodes" Documentary is worth the price of the Blu Ray set alone.

SPACE: 1999 remains Gerry & Sylvia Anderson's supreme Science Fiction Odyssey.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fly Me To The Moon !!! 24 Jan 2006
Format:DVD
I am revisting my childhood by watching this again. This is an absolute must have in any DVD collection. The attention to detail and quality of the DVD covers is stunning. Professor Bergman would be proud. It was so nice to see all my favourite characters, Martin Landu and Barbara Bain were superb and Barry Morse is someone I want to hug. Like meeting old friends again. I grew up on Space 1999 and have never forgotten it, but seeing this DVD boxset was like comming home!!
I particularly like the music, I think this was restored and the picture quality is excellent, really fined tuned with tender loving care. Can't wait for Year 2 to be given the VIP makeover!! So fly me to the moon and give me a comlock! I am ready to watch this DVD Boxset again and again!!

5.0 out of 5 stars the picture is fantastic 23 Nov 2005
Format:DVD
Network took on the task of restoring and remastering Space: 1999 Series One and exceeded my lofty expectations. In terms of video quality the picture quality is far more consistent within individual episodes and between the 24 episodes themselves. Colour, clarity, gamma and brightness levels are noticeably improved and flesh tones are superb for a 30 year old show.
Effects shots have been cleaned up nicely and the quality of this classic sci-fi tv series shines through.

The most pleasant surprise however has to be the sound quality. A brand-new 5.1 Dolby Digital sound mix has been prepared from the original magnetic tracks and the difference is a distinct improvement over the original mono. The sound is clear and has a nice spatial quality in many scenes. In certain episodes like The Last Enemy the bass is downright punchy with alien missles launching in room shaking fashion.

Overall this is hands-down the best release ever for my favourite sci-fi show. It reveals the quality of production that went into Space: 1999 Series One like never before and the bonus footage which includes This Episode featurettes for many episodes as well as never before seen sfx shots AND the original broadcast Intro and Entro for the premiere episode Breakaway as shown on tv in San Francisco in 1975 is priceless footage that any fan can appreciate and enjoy.

It is a tribute to see the show presented in such a glorious release on its 30th Anniversary and it reveals that Space: 1999 Series One was not just a weekly sci-fi tv series but more of a big screen production whose presentation is akin to 24 mini-movies that will impress even the most jaded observer. Even if you are a casual fan of the series or already purchased the earlier Carlton Region 2 release this new set from Network is a keeper.
