5 of 5 people found the following review helpful By Allan Harvey on 1 Feb. 2013
Format: Hardcover
A graphic novel continuation of Gerry Anderson's cult classic, Space: 1999.

The first section of the book, ”Awe", uses material from the old Charlton comics along with all-new story and artwork to re-tell the events of the first episode of the show. A nuclear accident on the Moon causes it to be blasted out of Earth orbit and flung into the depths of space carrying the inhabitants of Moonbase Alpha on a mystical journey of adventure.

"Aftershock" takes a look at these events from the perspective of those left behind on Earth once the Moon has departed. We see the devastation wrought and discover something of the histories of the key players on Moonbase Alpha. We're also introduced to new characters who will clearly play a large role in future tales. And seeds for future plotlines are sown.

The artwork is stunning throughout, with Gray Morrow's pencil in particular perfectly capturing the likenesses of the main cast. Gaska's script is utterly riveting. The scope of "Aftershock" makes it feel like a movie, the scenes of destruction blend wonderfully with the down to Earth characterisations. We quickly come to care for these characters.

I loved this book and heartily recommend it to all fans of Space: 1999. Hopefully it won't be long before we see more from Gaska and his collaborators.

Very much a labour of love and all the better for it.

BLAM have taken Gray Morrow's original art from the Charlton Space:1999 comics and re-written the words to present something that is all a 1999 fan could want, incorporating the original Breakaway pilot episode with words that were cut and newly added continuity.

Using new art and re-dialogued script, this wonderful hardcover brings the opening episode to life, complete with some new artwork too which totally matches Morrow's original work, and in some places replaces it (such as the scenes that featured Paul Morrow in the original comics, which were drawn by the artist to resemble his own likeness).

If you love the original format of Space:1999 I cannot recommend this graphic novel hightly enough, it's all you could dream and hope it would be.

Let's just hope ITV give the go ahead for more as the company have some interesting ideas to follow next.

I have to confess that my rating might depend a lot on the fact that I am a huge fan of the series; however, because of the same reason, I pay a lot of attention to details and characterisations. Aftershock and Awe is a very good attempt to revitalise Gerry Anderson's series, especially in the brand new story. In the first part of the graphic novel, we can read a sort of "abridged and modified" version of the old Breakaway comics published in the '70s. Although, an understandably, the purists might disagree with this "treatment", I liked the new version a lot as it rejuvenates some elements (dialogues and drawings) and take it to a more XXI Century canonical comic book. The second story is completely new and it tries to imagine what happened to the Earth during and after the nuclear explosion which blasted the moon out of orbit. New characters are introduced and some intricate (but enjoyable) plots, including a conspiracy, are presented. I recommend this book to all Space: 1999 fans and I do hope we can read more about this in future editions.

Excellent adaptation of the pilot episode of 70's sci-fi classic TV show "Space:1999". Awesome artwork and the writers extend the premise further and look at how the people of Earth were affected by the moon leaving Earth's orbit.
