wondeful idea not the best rpg,
By
This review is from: Space 1889: Science Fiction Role Playing in a More Civilized Time (Paperback)
Frank Chadwick has created an alternative history of our world.Set in a Victorian times ,mankind has already visited and colonised Mars, Venus and the Moon and guess what They all have life .Great inventions and races, with adventurers airships and bounders. The martians tend to be like red indians and Vesuvians are dinosaurs . The game could use more creatures shame he could not include some from ER Burroughs Barsoom .The game itself could be better it is limited and illogical like the original D&D but many good hours have been spent playing this. A great source of ideas worth having just for the ideas.

One of the most exciting rpg's, if you like Steam Punk settings, you MUST owe it. The playing sistem is a wee bit difficult, but once played two or three times you'll love that book!

Amazing background, clunky rules,
By HeroPress "Acrobatic Flea" (The Fortress Of Solitude) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Space 1889: Science Fiction Role Playing in a More Civilized Time (Paperback)
In many senses, this is everything I ever wanted from a roleplaying game: fantasy, alternate history, steampunk and pulp qualities, sci-fi, world exploration and so on.The idea of exploring alien cultures within our own solar system, flying steam-powered ships between the planets, hunting dinosaurs in the swamps of Venus, defending the British colonies on Mars, is the stuff gaming dreams are made of. Unfortunately the rules mechanics are very clunky and archaic - which is a shame, because the game has incredible support material available for it (particularly in the form of the Transactions of the Royal Martian Geographical Society books) that make you realise its enormous potential for long-term campaigning (always a point of personal importance to me when selecting a game).
