Watch out for temptation in the Garden of Eden…

Fran March's life in the idyllic village of St Ceridwen's Well is coming up roses. Almost.

If only daughter Rosie - the result of an uncharacteristic one-night stand 18 years ago - wasn't so curious about her real father, and if only husband Mal spent less time on his hobbies, everything would be bliss.

But then a face from the past turns Fran's world upside down. The handsome face of TV gardener Gabriel Weston, currently restoring the village's decrepit stately home. And when Fran's ex-boyfriend Tom appears on her doorstep, it seems that all the ghosts of Fran's romantic past are back to haunt her.

Can Fran keep Rosie's paternity under wraps? Why is Mal acting so oddly? And will Fran ever learn that every rose has its thorns…?

More About the Author

Trisha Ashley writes romantic comedies, and her latest novel,Wish Upon a Star, was her fifth consecutive Sunday Times Top Ten bestseller. Her novels have twice been shortlisted for the Melissa Nathan award for Romantic Comedy and Every Woman for Herself was nominated by readers as one of the top three romantic novels of the last fifty years.
She is from St Helens in West Lancashire, and believes that her typically dark Lancashire sense of humour in adversity, crossed with a good dose of Celtic creativity from her Welsh grandmother, have made her what she is today...whatever that is. Five of her novels are set in rural West Lancashire and three in Wales. They frequently explore aspects of the three F's that are a constant in her own life: Food, Flowers and Friendship and include delicious recipes at the back.
Nowadays she lives in North Wales, together with the neurotic Border Collie foisted onto her by her son, and a very chancy Muse.
She is the founder member of NW Novelistas Ink, a group of twelve novelists, several of whom are bestselling, who meet regularly in North Wales; she is also a long term member of the Society of Authors and a member of Literature Wales.
Her new novel, a reprint of Every Woman for Herself, will be published on May 8th, 2014. The dysfunctional Rhymer family, the result of a failed attempt by their father to recreate the Brontes, gather together at the Upvale Parsonage for what might well turn out to be the last time....
Trisha has a website at where you can find out more about her, sign up for her newsletter, or see a complete list of her books. You will also find her on twitter as @trishaashley.

5.0 out of 5 stars I wish there were more stars! 24 Nov 2004
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Once again Trisha Ashley has produced a true wonder of a book. On the surface, this may appear to be just another piece of fluff about man+woman=happy-ever-after. In a strange way, it is just that. But somehow Ashley manages to make this tale anything but conventional. Fran is married to a wonderful, handsome perfect man. Uh oh. That can't be good. She's happy with her art business (even if these wicked cartoons keep slipping out), her roses, her friends, and her daughter. Ah, her daughter - the product of a) a drunken one-night stand with "Adam" - a gardener (or at least she thinks he was a gardener)? Or b) her long-ago college boyfriend? Things start to slip and slide when a friend of Fran's lands back in the village after a divorce with the need to turn the family pile of stones into a commercial concern. He manages to finagle the grand old home onto one of those garden transformation shows and just guess who the master gardener is? And suddenly, out of the blue, her ex emails her in a very friendly way. To top this, her charming and perfect husband starts acting very strange and Fran is convinced the lovely couple next door is out to get her. I haven't even mentioned her friends, her mother, her mother-in-law, and the Druids! Ashley treats this all with intelligence and a large dose of subversive humor. I'm constantly amazed how funny and accessible her writing is without lowering to the lowest common denominator. It will be a crime if this gem of a novel does not come out in paperback and/or the US!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another triumph 16 Jan 2012

I really love Trisha Ashley's books. They are great fun, lively and full of characters. In this one I particularly liked the sanctimonious mother-in-law! The stories are interesting and well-written and she manages to keep you guessing. They are always full of information about other topics,(in this one it is old-fashioned roses),which adds to the story. A really great treat

5.0 out of 5 stars Such a brilliant read 9 Oct 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is another excellent book by Trisha Ashley.

On the surface Fran is happy married, she has a beautiful daughter Rosie, close friends and a job that she loves, illustrating roses. But, even from the outset it is easy to tell that Fran's husband is not the man for her. She makes excuses for him, doesn't question his absences and kids herself that things are OK in her marriage, even though she misses the lack of intimacy and affection of late.

Fran has kept the name of her daughter's father a secret; most assume that it was her long time boyfriend from her college days. But, Fran remembers Adam, a gardener, with whom she had a drunken, but very memorable, one night stand many years ago.

Adam has since become a famous TV gardener and author who takes on huge garden restoration projects which are then shown on television. His latest project brings him back into contact with Fran, threatening to turn her carefully orchestrated life upside down.

The next door neighbours' antics are creepy and it was great to see them get their come uppance - something that I wish had happened to Fran's husband - he got away with his appalling behaviour far too lightly.

This isn't your usual chick lit; it is warm, funny, light hearted, well written and with likeable characters. I absolutely loved it and just could not put it down for more than a few minutes at a time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Wonderful! 16 Oct 2004
By Annette
Always offbeat and a little quirky Trisha Ashley's books never disappoint.' The Generous Gardner' is no exception. Smart, witty, and fantastically fun this book had me giggling from beginning to end.
Fran March has created a lovely, idyllic life for herself and her teenage daughter, Rosie, in the village of St Ceridwen's Well, with Fran's handsome but selfish husband Mal. Fran has a successful career as an illustrator and as a budding cartoonist, but all too soon everything begins to change with the arrival of two men from Fran's past that threaten to force her to expose the one, tiny, little secret she has kept hidden from everyone over the years; that being the father of her daughter Rosie.
Soon the garden clippings are flying everywhere as old boyfriends try to re-stake their claim, evil neighbors plot to ruin her marriage, and just when she's thinking it couldn't get any worse, her husband accepts a job in paradise for himself, leaving Fran to wonder what has happened to her Eden?
Ashley is at her very best here with loads of warm, belly-laugh-moments and self-deprecating humor that will strike a chord with every woman. And speaking of 'every woman,' it's always, nice to be able to check in with old friends from Ashley's past books and happily we are given that opportunity as both 'Charlie Rhymer 'from 'Every Woman For Herself' along with her alternative woman's magazine 'Skint Old Northern Woman,' (how do I subscribe I wonder?) and, horror author 'Cass Leigh' from Ashley's last book 'Singled Out' are both mentioned.
No doubt about it, another winner for Trisha Ashley! I adored this book, and I am sure you will too!
