Very interesting study of Soviet experimental aircraft and prototypes. Many Soviet aircraft types were built, and of course each was shrouded in secrecy. Not much text but really a photo easy from Soviet archives. Some very weird types like so called "mother ships", the "Caspian Sea Monster" and high Altitude aircraft. It also reveals a lot of information on the extent to which Nazi technology was tranferred to the Soviet Union contributing to make that country a leader in aerospce. A very interesting book.

I wanted to like this book. I was seduced by the S-37/47 Berkut on the cover, and imagined the book to be filled with exotic designs that marveled the mind and that each would have a fascinating story to tell about the hows and whys and why nots. There is that, once you seperate the fascinating from the not.

This book is full. I mean so full that it becomes repetitive and monotonous and I am an aviation enthusiast. The level of detail is impressive, with design ranging from the creative to the absurd. In compiling this level of detail, the authors are to be commended. But I feel that the book would have been so much better had the book focused on 30 of the most intriguing designs and told that story, rather than the 120-odd designs.

I would buy this used, because it does make for interesting reading, and the aviation enthusiast will enjoy parts, but probably not the whole. For me, I always enjoyed the Myasishschev designs for their unique grace.

Firstly, this is a properly put together book. After discarding the cheapening effect of the glossy cover sleeve, within is a real cloth hard-bound book, full of shiny pages. There are no artful empty spaces, nearly all of the pages are full to the brim with photos, text and line profiles of the many experimental 'planes that the Soviets created over the last century, and a lot of them are eye-openers. Invention! The only drawback to a lot of the photos is the fact that, unlike today, the Russians appear never to have possessed a decent optical industry, and there are comparatively few of the bitingly sharp and crisp B/W pictures, going back to the first world war, that we have come to expect when reviewing our own history of flight. Most of the post WW11 pic's, though, are quite good. There is a good jets-era colour photo section at the back of the book captioned only for reference.
The text is by the tireless Bill Gunston, detailed, and as usual by this most gifted of writers on aviation, to lift the relentlessness of technical detail, anecdotal. This means that 'Soviet X-Planes' is not only readable but is enjoyable to read.
