Product Description

Product Description

This seems to be regarded as the West's answer to "The Soviet School of Chess" by Alexander Kotov ISBN 4871878198 who asserts superiority in the Soviet playing style. However, those who say that are mistaken. This book by a New Zealander who emigrated to England because of the greater opportunities to play chess there, fully concurs with Kotov that the Soviet players were the best in the world. In this book, R. G. Wade, the Chief National Coach of British Chess Federation, with more than one hundred international chess events behind him, examines Soviet Chess. In this unique work, more than 120 games in Descriptive Notation of the leading grandmasters in the USSR are analyzed and commented on, including some of the greatest games ever played by giants such as Botvinnik, Smyslov, Bronstein, Petrosian, Tal and countless others. With the tremendous wealth of biographical material and information, this makes a unique and incomparable reference work, a source of inspiration to all chess players. Robert G. Wade was a chess player, author, journalist, and coach. Born on April 10, 1921 in Dunedin, New Zealand, he won the New Zealand championship three times before moving to England in 1948 to further his chess career.

Synopsis 6 July 2007
Format:Paperback
Bob Wade, twice British champion and for decades chief junior coach of the British Chess Federation, was one of the driving forces behind the explosion of chess in England which led to three team silver medals in the chess Olympiads of 1984, 1986 and 1988 and to a British player, Nigel Short, challenging for the world title in 1993. Wade won the International Master title in his own right, and would doubtless have obtained a Grandmaster title under modern title stipulations. He is also a noted chess author and has been awarded the OBE for services to chess. Soviet Chess is best read along with Kotov & Yudovitch: The Soviet School of Chess. It is an examination of the Soviet chess machine but seen from the point of view of an expert outsider, fascinated by the training methods which were capable of identifying and nurturing talent up to grandmaster and world champion level on a consistent basis.

Chess Grandmaster Bob Wade examines the secret behind the Soviet game of chess and how such a nation can consistently produce expert players. From the point of view of a westerner, this exploration is doubly fascinating and Wade analyses the strengths of such players as Botvinnik, Tal, Alekhine and Spassky. this is a companion book in the hardinge simpole series to the soviet school of chess. the main difference is that it is written by a western expert -twice british chess champion-who used the soviet model as the template for his own highly successful chess training of british juniors.

the book is packed with insights-positions -problems and well annotated games showing the soviet elite in action.
