Product Description

At the age of five years, Maharajah Duleep Singh found himself on the golden throne of the Punjab, the `land of five rivers', one of the most powerful independent Kingdoms in the Asian sub-continent and a thorn in the advancement of the British Empire. A country built by his father, the legendary one-eyed Lion-of-the-Punjab, Ranjit Singh, who was a contemporary of Napoleon, and who ruled the region by the power of his sword and with the fear of his name. The infant Maharajah Duleep Singh had much to live up to, although he found the enemies of his reign were not just from over the British-Sutlej border.

After the Anglo-Sikhs Wars, Maharajah Duleep Singh, still a minor, was separated from his mother, surrendered the famed Koh-i-noor diamond and was removed from power by the underhand-means of the East India Company. Effectively exiled to Britain, he became an instant favourite of Queen Victoria and an exotic party accessory. He passed his time with the crème de la crème of Victorian high society; shooting game with the Prince of Wales in his very own Indian Palace in Suffolk's Elveden Hall and leading a most extravagant and lavish lifestyle. But after trying his hand at writing a West End play, standing for parliament, playing the field, and remonstrating with the British Government for the shortfall of his stipend, the deposed sovereign became disillusioned by his surroundings and sought to make a stand against the tyrannical establishment!

5.0 out of 5 stars Untapped Anglo Sikh Heritage, 22 May 2009
By Sodhi Singh Mann "Sodhi Singh" (London UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
"Until the Lions tell their own History, history will always glorify the hunters"

This Beautifully produced book revives the life of Maharaja Duleep Singh and his lineage, the love of the legacy by the author Peter Bance vibrantly put's across the spirit and sadness that remains in many a Punjabi heart.

He has truly laid a stepping stone in this untapped Anglo Sikh Heritage it shines through on every page with the vast in-depth chapters with never seen photographs of the Maharajas family in the UK.

This masterpiece is a true eye opener that tells the passionate and sad story of a could have been King hidden from his people with no rights to his ancestral land, that his father "The Great Maharaja Ranjit Singh"ruled.

Far away from London in the far fields of Thetford once lived this prince transformed into a country squire that was groomed and converted to be the "Indian pet" of the British.

This AMAZING BOOK shows the political web of disarray that the family was put under right up until death of all its members.

An end to a reign of generations that transformed the Punjab into the most powerful state in India this young prince was destroyed and now stands represented in stone with a Statue and a grave of his family and his former home that can only be seen from afar, in Thetford UK.

If you want to be apart of this legacy and know the full story BUY IT !!!
