This modest, hesitant and unassuming debut album offered little hint of what was to come a decade or so on. At this stage, Texas were a world away from the clinical polish and base-covering genre-hopping of White On Blonde, and seemed happy enough, and still somewhat surprised, that they were being allowed to make music for a living. The original Texas line-up was a smart blend of veterans and ingenues: bass player Johnny McElhone and drummer Stuart Kerr had performed, between them, in Altered Images, Hipsway and Love & Money; Ry Cooder-obsessed guitarist Ally McErlaine and singer Sharleen Spiteri were new to it all. Between them, the four managed to invest tired country-rock forms with some naive freshness, best exemplified here by "I Don't Want A Lover"--the first song they wrote, and their first hit. --Andrew Mueller

In my humble opinion, the hype and success surrounding White on Blonde and The Hush has overshadowed some brilliant earlier work from Texas.
The debut LP Southside showed what was to come, it took WonB and Hush to realise it. The tracks "I don't want a Lover" and "Thrill is Gone" received heavy airplay at the time, as well as the instrumental title track (often uncredited).
If you've already bought the later CDs, this should be in your collection too. Sharleen's soaring vocals combine with solid good tunes to make a classic album.
The track "Everyday Now" is worth the asking price alone - what a hook!

Can't believe that in all this time, only 2 people have felt inspired to mention how soaringly brilliant this album is.... So I plan to rectify that here and now.... THIS RECORD IS EXCELLENT!!!!! AND YOU'RE A FOOL IF YOU DON'T OWN IT!!!!!!!!

This album is by far superior to any debut album, released by any artist, due to its vocals by the somewhat overlooked Sharleen Spiteri. Its haunting songs and its country style songs, no doubts about it come together to provide the fans with the best album of the eighties if not of all time. If you are after gutsy yet altogether brilliant songs then this is the album for you. The best song on the album is by far I dont want a lover, but different people have different tastes.
Everyday now is also an excellent song that deserves as much attention as it can get.
