Dementium: The Ward is a mature themed first person shooter/survival horror game telling the tale of a man awakening to find himself in a mysterious, derelict hospital, apparently frozen in time. Confronted by the deadly, grotesque surgical experiments that roam the halls and a series of challenging puzzles, he must face his deepest fears in order to unlock the mysteries of the hospital and escape with his life.
Dementium is a completely new experience on the Nintendo DS, pushing the platform to its limits with full 3D visuals and bone-chilling audio. It also challenges the player to ask questions, thinking beyond the surface of the in-game surroundings. For those who survive the terrors of the Ward, a shocking conclusion awaits!

Great! but no save points!,

Its a genuinly spooky game, definatly enough to seriously give you the creeps, with a very 'silent hill' feel to it. it works well for the ds using the stylus to look around and the arrows to move. its hard, but not too hard, combat works well (unless your using the nightstick) and having a 'notepad' is a nice idea.
the main problems with this game are: lack of save points, whenever you die or quit the game, you start at the last checkpoint you passed, which are ridiculously far apart, causing huge amounts of aggrivation. and, the fact that if you leave a room, then re-enter it, all the enemies re-spawn, but none of the health/bullets do. this causes problems. but overall, its spooky and adult and a good game to play.

A cross between Silent Hill and Doom,

The European release of this game has been a long time coming, but thankfully its well worth it as it fixes a number of gripes players had with the US release - so you can disregard pretty much all the bad points in the other review ;)
The game is basically an attempt at a 1st person survival horror on the DS, and it works very effectively. The horror aspect is akin to the great Silent Hill and provides a steady unnerving atmosphere with a few short sharp shocks for good measure. The actual gameplay itself is very much like the earlier 1st person shooters, such as the immortal Doom. Naturally, seeing as its on the DS, the controls aren't very complex and it means the combat is nice and simple "back to basics" kind of stuff. Its also just like in Doom 3 where you have a torch to guide you through the levels, but when you switch to a weapon then you unfortunately lose the torch - personally I didn't mind that but I know some people who hated it. The sound effects and music are also well worth mentioning because they are simply fantastic - some of the best I've ever heard on the DS. Together with the graphics they really help to create the whole spooky atmosphere of the game. The only real critisism I could throw at it would be its length. The game is short and once you complete it you might not go back again, at least not for a long time. Overall though I'd recommend it to anyone who loves their survival horror, and for once the European market has got the best version of a game!

Why do they bother?,

yes really Atmospheric and creepy, like a cross between fear and resedent evil so much promise and so compelling i so wanted to play more
but this is another example of a game ruined by in this case 3 bad and so easily rectified design desisions in third place - the map does not show blocked routes which makes it useless altough routes are generally liniear, and you cant draw on the map which would be helpfull to mark blocked routed or items you need to return to, even though you can draw on your note paper, in second place - you seem to only have one arm which means you can only use 1 thing at a time, so what, you say, lots of games like this, fine but the whole game is set in the dark in a hospital so you need your torch on all the time and have to fratically switch between torch and gun or stick etc when something attacks you after you have done this and messed it up a thousand times on the first level the rest of the game dosent look so sweet. and in first place and a classic bad design choice, if you die you have to go right back to the start of a level, yes you can save and quit but i repeat if you die you will go right back to the start of a level and being that generally you die right at the end of a level when things get tough you are going to get so annoyed very quickly... no thanks >>> update ... from the comments it appears that some of these issues may have been sorted in the EU version. If they were then it should be a very interesting game.
