Deana's major label days are apparently long gone, but that leaves her with more flexibility to record whatever she feels is right for her. That's really what music should be about, but it's not always what sells best. I really hope this album does the business because it deserves to.

The songs are mostly about relationships, but there always appear to be many different situations that songwriters can use and Deana has found what are, at the very least, new twists on old themes. Sometimes the problem is the man in her life (You can't stay, a song in which she wants him to go so that she can be free to start again with another man), sometimes she observes another woman's problem (I know better) and sometimes the problem is hers (I'll save my love for you, in which she seems to want a man she can't have - at least not for a while). The whole album is rounded off nicely by the title track.

Deana is not the most prolific recording artist, but she always delivers quality. This album maintains that tradition.

It was Deana Carter's 2005 The Story Of My Life that won me over, with its shimmering harmonies, crunchy guitar licks and self-effacing cover. But 8 years later, Southern Way of Life consummates the relationship. The shimmering vocals and bloke-ish guitars are present and correct but this time an even more delightful cover, bare tootsies and all. There are more glamorous pics inside with Deana in a Little Black Dress but the cover says it all: relaxed, fun, summertime vibes from an older woman who's still "got it" and after years of big label frustration is definitely doing her own thing.

Deana's own thing turns out to be much less countrified than the title or her signature 90s hit Did I Shave My Legs For This? would lead you to expect. Really, this is classic, intelligent adult pop with a patina of country in some of the vocal tics. In fact, it's the sort of stuff Alanis Morissette or Sheryl Crow should have grown up into, but somehow lost their way.

The 90s pop reference is quite helpful, since it's all over this album, both in production (Deana is on knob-twiddling duties too) and song structure. Some of these songs sound like the hits that All Saints promised but never delivered. So, don't be deterred by the C&W associations or the bare feet: this is machine tooled like a greatest hits collection and steeped in studio wisdom and strong songwriting.

Opener 'You Can't Stay' sets the tone with a rising, yearning anthem and Deana's familiar brand of emotional ambiguity - a woman in a new relationship telling her ex to get lost but hoping he doesn't.

Like finding an old friend again.... 5 Mar 2014

It's been too long since Deana has released new material yet this collection sounds just enough like the old Deana to be familiar and new enough to be fresh. There are fun songs like That's Just Me and Southern Way of Life, and poignant songs like I Know Better. As soon as I heard the first chorus of You Can't Stay, I knew I would love this album. Glad you're back Deana!
