Product Description

CD Description

TWO SEMINAL COLLECTIONS OF DEEP 1960S SOUTHERN SOUL FROM THE SSS LABEL ON CD FOR THE FIRST TIME WITH 18 BONUS TRACKS SSS International, along with its affiliates Silver Fox and Minaret, produced and released some of the finest Southern soul and deep soul recordings of the 60s. These two original Charly albums, originally released in 1978 and 1982, collect the finest of these tracks. Both albums are making their debut on CD along with 18 bonus tracks. SSS International Records was formed by Shelby Singleton in 1966. Singleton, the husband of the singer Margie Singleton, entered the music industry by promoting his wife but soon carved an illustrious career for himself, initially working for Mercury before branching out on his own with SSS International and eventually purchasing the legendary Sun Records.

By Richard
There's no such thing in the States called Northern Soul but there IS Southern Soul. Its only surfaced in the U K via Stax and Atlantic and is at least 50% created by white people. Thus O C Smith's "Son of Hickory Holler's Tramp"-not here but a massive hit in the U K-was written by country star Dallas Frazier, originally made by Sanford Clark and produced by Jerry Fuller
Most of this stuff from various Indie labels like the Memphis based SSS International and Lelan Roger's Silver Fox never gained release here as singles but in the late 70s the French owned Charly label issued a stack of it on 2 LPs
Silver Fox signed Betty Lavette-today the highest profile artist here because of her White House connections and after 40 years in the wilderness she came across as a mainstream artists cutting an album called The Great British Songbook.
The label also issued Calvin Leavy's single of Cummins Prison Farm because at the time it was in the news after a number of skeletons were discovered and the papers loved it because of the alleagations of torture.Ironically Leavy was nearly sent there himself 20 odd years later after being arrested for drug dealing but at the 11th hour sent to another prison
