This is an excellent and informative introduction to the subject, and is recommended for anyone interested in the history of regional British railways. This edition is 52 pages with an extra 12 pages of photographs, and with drawings and maps in the text. It is No. 56 in the Oakwood Press' Library of Railway History from 1958.

The Southern Railway was formed in 1923 from the grouping of the South Eastern & Chatham, the London, Brighton & South Coast, and the London & South Western Railways. It endured until Nationalisation in 1947.
