Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, an intrepid and eccentric adventurer, transferred his passion for flying to the written word by writing several classics of aviation literature, including Southern Mail and Night Flight. Based on Saint-Exupéry's trail-blazing flights for the French airmail service over the Sahara and later, the Andes, these two novels evoke the tragic courage and nobility of the airborne pioneers who took enormous risks, flying in open cock-pits in planes that were often fragile and unstable.

The French Writer and aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (1900-1944), was born in Lyon. His first two books, SOUTHERN MAIL and NIGHT FLIGHT, are distinguished by a poetic evocation of the romance and discipline of flying. Later works, including WIND, SAND AND STARS and FLIGHT TO ARRAS, stress his humanistic philosophy. Saint-Exupéry's popular children's book THE LITTLE PRINCE is also read by adults for its allegorical meaning. Saint-Exupéry's plane disappeared during a mission in World War II.
This review concerns the quality of the printing of this book not the content. Although published by Penguin the print is of poor quality. This appears to be due to the type of paper used which has caused the ink to bleed giving it a blurred appearance which is difficult to read. I purchased a copy of "Wind, Sand & Stars" in the same series which does not have the same problem.
A classic which rewards re-reading. The author builds the tension at the airport and in the aircraft to a high degree. A gripping story with finely observed characters. These early flights did so much to pave the way for today's services which we take for granted. Along with works by Sir Gordon Taylor this book, although a work of fiction, stands out.
I read it in French, which is my mother language. Saint-Exupery is really a great author as well as an excellent pilot. In this book he tells the story of a pionneer of the aviation flying in the night without any equipment. In the other part of the book, he explains how the first pilots opened flights from France to Africa; he describes very well the risks of being lost in the desert. Very well written. Read with pleasure.
