5.0 out of 5 stars Great 12 Aug 2011
By Amy
Format:Paperback
It is definitely worth paying the extra to get the most recent version. Things have changed in SE Asia so much that the old ones still say you cannot do thing that are now easily accessible.

2.0 out of 5 stars Buy the individual country guides 5 Jun 2010
Format:Paperback
I bought this book and used it when travelling around south east asia. Although it's quite useful to find somewhere to stay etc, I came to hate it over time. It's basically trying to cram too much in. It covers a load of countries and many places only get a few pages. It lists a few places to stay, which are all overrun with other people who bought this book. It's big and heavy and doesn't cover anywhere in great depth. I like lonely planet, I also used their guides in New Zealand, USA, Fiji and Australia, but this South East Asia book just doesn't do anywhere justice. Second hand guide books can be picked up cheap all over asia, so buy one for the country you're in, and the next one after, and then just swap or buy and sell them as you go. You get a wider range of places to stay and things to do, and it's usually lighter in the backpack too. So don't buy this book, but get other Lonely Planets instead.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best travel guide ever written 27 April 2011
Format:Paperback
I bought this book prior to a 6 month trip out East with the kids and used it through every step of the planning and then visited just about every country in the book.
I found it to be a superb resource and an absolute lifesaver at times.

I estimate this book saved us hundreds of pounds and got us out of a few spots of bother by providing us the best information on the locations to find our accommodation. The border advice is all up to date and the book is full of maps that are a god send when you turn up in places like Jakarta off a 3am flight from Singapore.

The only problem we found was that some of their 'best pick' places were a bit suspect. In fact some were down right ridiculous and I am not convinced money/free beer didn't cross hands.

That said, I wouldn't dream of going back to the Far East without this beauty. Just ignore the 'best picks' and you'll be fine.

The kindle version of the LP guide has obviously been adapted to e-devices with built in links, but not much thought has gone into how it looks and operates. The formatting is ugly and difficult to navigate. Maps are difficult to find, and links in the book dont work.

Would not buy the kindle version again, and would instead go for downloading the pdf chapters via the LP website.

5.0 out of 5 stars perfectly detailed 30 May 2013
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Lonely planet books are the best for a reason… they’re packed with details but still easy to read and organised. A lot of this info was useful, but when visiting poorer countries the prices featured are subject to a lot of change, this isn’t a big deal though as it wouldn’t be by much. As long as you’re aware of this, I would defo advice getting this book and taking it with you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful 15 May 2013
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Used this book a lot. We've been to the area 3 times now, so know our way around pretty well. It does get out of date very quickly, but it's a huge area to cover in one book. Good for planning, just don't rely on everything being exactly as described when you get there!

5.0 out of 5 stars worked like a treat 22 Mar 2013
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
used daily for my 3 months in SE Asia and never let me down. Oh wait, once it told me the cheapest way to get from Cameron Highlands in Malaysia was to take 2 busses and not one but I forgive you. A great must have tool, I also bought their South America on a shoe string afterwards

If you're one of those travellers that hates to be seen carrying a guide with you, everywhere you go, then you may find this humdinger of a book a slight drawback. But if you can pull off trying to look like some "oracle" who can orientate his/herself around SE Asia without the need for this book, you will still surely fall foul of some misinformation that you could've wisely found all in here. Make no mistake, it isn't by any means a bible, hence calling it a "guide", but it's beautifully well put together, strong and well-binded, so the many countries you cross will still not be enough to tear this book into shreds. Each country is remarkably well covered, considering just how many countries it has to fit in and really helps you to plan where to go.

I've been travelling for nearly 8 years now and make sure I buy all my Lonely Planets from Amazon. Even if the postage price is a costly consideration, you're still most likely to get it quicker than other online retailers and still much cheaper

4.0 out of 5 stars Good stuff!!!
Very happy with the purchase. Was much cheaper than in stores as well, even though I had to pay to ship it to Ireland, so well worth it.

I'm comparing this book to the lonely planet china book, so maybe my judgement of it is harsh as that book is larger and more detailed. Read more
