Product Description

Southampton Murder Victims is the result of painstaking research by the author, who had unrivalled access to police and other archive files not normally available to the general public. This has resulted in fascinating accounts of 80 murders committed in Southampton between 1783 and 2009, including some that took place abroad on the high seas and subsequently investigated by Southampton police under the Merchant Shipping Acts.

Jim Brown has also outlined the changes in legislation relating to what was for many years a mandatory death sentence and the alterations to the court systems over the period.

Included in the accounts are Jim’s recollections of investigations in which he was personally involved as a member of the murder squad, and these give a special insight in the methods employed by the police in the 1950s and 1960s.

Many individual cases show interesting aspects of law and the varied ways in which unfortunate victims were killed, by shooting, bludgeoning, strangling, stabbing and poisoning. The various motives include drunken and domestic rage, jealousy, robbery and sex.

The book contains many illustrations, some of them official police photos showing the scene of the crime and published for the first time.

The murder accounts appear in strict chronological order, allowing the reader to dip into the period of their choice. The earlier cases will also arouse nostalgia for roads and premises that have long since vanished.

Included in the accounts are Brown’s recollections of investigations in which he was personally involved as a member of the murder squad, and these provide a unique and fascinating insight into the methods employed by the police in the 1950s and 60s.

The book contains many illustrations, some of them official police photos showing the scene of the crime and published for the first time, making Southampton Murder Victims a must-read for the bloodthirsty, the historians and the just plain curious.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good victim focused crime book 5 Dec 2010
Format:Hardcover
In this book Jim Brown uses some previously unseen sources, including some of the archives of the Hampshire Constabulary. There are 80 murder cases including some recent cases such as the murder of Luke Woolf (2009) and the murder of Wieslaw Filus (2009).
In the case of Iris Dawkins (1960) you will discover how a dog called Sophie helped catch the murderer.
In 1967 elderly Lizzie Dymott was tied up in her bungalow and left to die by burglars. Nine days later she was visited by her nephew who found her dead. Those responsible for her harrowing death may have served their time, but the crime should haunt them for the rest of their lives.
It makes a change to read a crime book that gives more prominence to the victims than those who committed the crime. The book contains photographs of some of the memorials to the victims.

1.0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK IF YOU HAVE ANY RESPECT 6 Feb 2013
Format:Hardcover
IF YOU CAN HANDLE KNOWING THAT THIS AUTHOR HAS NO RESPECT FOR THE VICTIMS AND FAMILIES THEN THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU. Rest assured that the money-grabbing, profit-obsessed author has taken it upon himself to collect images and information relating to victims without gaining permission from families. People are still grieving over these poor souls while Jim Brown makes a quick buck out of showing off harrowing photographs. Well done, Jim. You are a despicable human being.

5.0 out of 5 stars MURDER, HE WROTE 8 Oct 2010
By Joyce
Format:Hardcover
This is a fascinating book, well researched, lucidly written and including many photos not seen elsewhere. Written in a way that is both perceptive and compassionate to the victims of crime, this excellent volume is also a fabulous page turner into the bargain.
Anyone with an interest in real crime, in criminal and legal history, in captivating storytelling or in the Southampton area will not be disappointed. Jim Brown, the author, is well qualified to share these stories. Jim served with the murder squad as a young police officer in Southampton and worked in law enforcement and with the coroner's office in Southampton all his life. In retirement, Jim is able to share his passionate, wise and unique insights into these lives and crimes centred on Southampton.
So many "Real Crime" titles are at best pulp fiction, but Jim Brown's new book will be read voraciously by all who value good prose coupled with meticulous research and a deep understanding of people and their motivations and complexities.
I particularly value the way the author places the murders in chronological order from 1783 to 2009 which makes it easy and intriguing to see the changes taking place in procedure and attitudes over the years.
A must read! Go on - you know you want to!

1.0 out of 5 stars how dare they 6 Feb 2013
Format:Hardcover
Southampton murder volume 2 has details of where the victims graves are, and photos of the crime scenes which they DID NOT HAVE PERMISSION
to publish! I know a family involved with one of the murders, and they did not even know these horrific images of their loved one were being published. disgraceful.

5.0 out of 5 stars great research, great value 28 Mar 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
As a history buff and former Winchester-er, this sounded like a good choice for me...until I read the 2 star review which gave me some doubts. However, considering the cheap price and my desire to actually use my Kindle having shelled out for one at last, I thought I'd give it a try anyway.

I'm pleased to say it was the right decision (and that the unfavourable review is absolute rot - see my 'comment' for further thoughts).

In summary, 'Southampton Murder Victims' is very thoroughly researched, with clear and concise case stories that keep you gripped the whole way through. They don't drag on needlessly, they are sensitive without being mawkish, and they provide a real insight into the ensuing police work, details of which are very rarely made public.

An amazing number of photos for a Kindle book as well (I didn't know so many were possible), which show lots of details that, again, I was very surprised to find made publicly available.

A fascinating read, well worth the money.

2.0 out of 5 stars Macabre yellow press reading 2 Jan 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
The book gives an account of sixty murder cases committed in Southampton. The time frame of the murders is spanning over three centuries, from 18th into 21st. The cases are sparsely presented and read like a badly written sensation-seeking article from the daily mail.

There is only brief information on the lives of the victims and background in few of the cases. There is no analysis of the issues leading to the crimes and no reflection on the British society (or even on life in Southampton during the centuries). As presented, the book could be an account of any murder chronicles in any city in the UK.

I do not recommend.
