If you do follow the TV show then this information won't come as a shock to you. South Park fans will love The Stick of Truth as it follows closely to what makes the TV series so popular. The graphics are a perfect representation of how the TV show looks and you'll feel as if you have dropped right into the middle of an actual episode. All of the characters you've come to know and love have a part in the game somewhere, be it as playable characters, enemies or powerful summons. The amount of additional fan service is incredible - the entire town is here to explore and you can transform your character using a multitude of accessories (such as my favourite, chinballs) that have all appeared in the show itself at some point.
You control 'the new kid' - a recently arrived resident of South Park - as he familiarises himself with his new hometown. Soon you are drawn into an epic battle involving Cartman's human faction and Kyle's Elven band. Both groups vie for the Stick of Truth, a powerful item that bestows upon the wielder incredible (imaginary) powers. Soon the story escalates and the factions have some difficult choices to make in order to save the world from (imagined) destruction.
The Stick of Truth is a turn-based RPG.Read more ›
South Park is no stranger to video game adaptations. The earliest appeared shortly after the show's debut in 1997 and were soulless cash-ins revolving around racing or first-person action games in a horrible 3D version of the game's distinctive art style. Creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, unimpressed, approached Obsidian Entertainment with the idea of making a new game that employed the show's signature 2D art style and was also faithful to its satirical, biting (and occasionally very sick) humour. Obsidian rose to the occasion, putting together an RPG design which would involve Parker and Stone as the main writers and voice artists.
The result is a game that is so faithful to the source material that, unless someone spots you controlling it or you get into a battle, it can easily be mistaken for an episode of the actual TV show. For a studio whose often amazing artistic vision is too often compromised by budget or time, Obsidian finally managed to hit it out of the park on their first attempt, rather than after a lengthy patching cycle. If you are a South Park fan, there is simply no further need for further discussion: get ahold of this pronto.Read more ›
You're literally playing a long episode of the cartoon. The look and feel of it is excellent, the humor is.. Well south park, not for the tender hearted but utterly hilarious for those who enjoy it.
But aside from humor, even the gameplay is rewarding. With a genuinely successful battle system that is not too complex (It takes a few goes to get used to the blocking aspect, but simple) a wide range of abilities and moves, make it a thinking game of which attacks are going to effect certain opponents.
You don't even need to have watched south park religiously. I hadn't watched south park since the movie, and i have been in hysterics since. You may obviously get some of the inside jokes, or perhaps the pictures in different characters houses that relate to a particular episode, other than that, newcomers will find this just as funny.
So just buy it! Mmkay.
Well, what to say? If you don't love South Park - you are not going to 'get' or enjoy this game, this is the most high-fidelity game conversion of a show/movie I have ever played, far surpassing anything Marvel or DC have ever produced. The action feels like you are watching a full-length version of the show, the animation is exactly the same - despite the ability to fully customise your avatar, with hair, skin colour, clothes and flair. There are four main classes to play; The Fighter, The Wizard, The Thief and The Jew - each with their own skill tree to develop.
The fights are turn-based, much like the classic Final Fantasy 7 - you are allocated one potion, one defensive posture and one attack per turn. This keeps the action strategic rather than a button-mashing frantic experience, although the ability to block enemy attacks with a well-timed click keeps your attention on the fight during opposition turns. Choose either Butters, Jimmy, Stan, Kyle, Cartman or Kenny as your partner - each with their own particular skill-set that will help you advance in South Park.
There are a multitude of collectibles; try to make everyone in South Park your friend - some will even help in battle; Mr Kim, Mr Slave, Mr Hanky and even Jesus (yay).Read more ›
