Book Description

1 Oct 2007 Pearson's Canal Companions
"Pearson's Canal Companions" have achieved cult status with canal users of all kinds. These lively, colourful and committed books are generally regarded as the most detailed, informative and down-right entertaining guides to the inland waterways. Each of the nine titles in the series covers a popular route or area with large scale and highly detailed maps accompanied by a wide ranging commentary, descriptions of waterside towns and villages, and itemised listings on eating and drinking, shopping, visitor centres, public transport and boating facilities. Of particular use to walkers and cyclists is the classification of towpath conditions into three grades. Considerable coverage is given to items of industrial archaeological interest. "The South Midlands and Warwickshire Ring Canal Companion" covers the Warwickshire Ring, Ashby Canal and connecting canals.

These books tell you all you need to know about the canal you are navigating. The maps are informative, the cruising times are reliable, the shops, pubs, moorings, locks and landmarks are all listed and explained. Pearson's Guides take the hassle out of planning your holiday and allow you to be sure of when and where you will be able to moor, eat, shop et.c. That information would be worth the purchase price on its own, but the real joy of Pearson's is the delightful way the history of the canal is brought to life in a charming narrative which follows your route at a perfect pace. I'm an inquisitive sort and I often wonder "what IS that massive abandoned building?" or "WHY did the canal branch here?" and Pearson's tells me.
With these books you have all the advantages of local knowledge, while keeping the joy of exploration. They cannot be recommended highly enough.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good canal guides... 18 May 2009
These Pearson Guides are very useful for the walker or boater alike. They are clear and friendly in their manner and the reviews are fair in the local facilities section. The only down side is the maps are not uniformly drawn with north at the top, which allows a good graphic set up but can be a little distracting for some die hard map readers (me!).

5.0 out of 5 stars Pearsons Canal Companion 2 July 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase
As always, pearsons Canal Companion was invaluable. We used it to plan our route and overnight stops and it was spot on for timing and detail. Unfortunatly, a couple of Pubs had closed since the book was published, but we expected this and had made provision. We managed the Warwickshire ring in One week which inclused Gas St in Birmingham center. We always use Pearsons which can@t be bettered.
