More About the Author

Dr Arthur Agatston is a cardiologist and an associate professor of medicine at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. He has served on committees of the American Society of Echocardiography, the American College of Cardiology, and the Society of Atherosclerosis Imaging, where he is a founding member of the board of directors. He was recently elected to serve on the board of directors of The American Dietetic Association Foundation.

Dr Agatston has authored over 100 articles and abstracts for scientific journals, including the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, the American Journal of Cardiology and the Annals of Internal Medicine. He has served as an expert consultant to the Clinical Trials Committee of the National Institutes of Health, and he has participated as a speaker, faculty member, and organizer of numerous academic cardiology meetings and symposia.

Along with his renown as a researcher, lecturer, and pioneer in clinical and preventive cardiology, Dr Agatston is best known publicly as the author of the best-selling The South Beach Diet.

Where It All Began
Raised on the north shore of Long Island, New York, Dr Agatston's father and grandfather were doctors, and Arthur Agatston knew from an early age that he also desired a career in medicine. After graduating from New York University School of Medicine and completing his cardiology fellowship at NYU, Dr Agatston elected to combine academics with clinical practice. He accepted a position at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach, which was associated with the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

Where It's Led
Over the years, Dr Agatston's pioneering work in non-invasive cardiac imaging has resulted in computerized tomography scanning methods and measures that bear his name: the Agatston Score and the Agatston Method, which are used for screening coronary calcium and are recognized worldwide.

As a practising cardiologist, Dr Agatston did not set out to develop a weight-loss plan. But he did create what became known as the South Beach Diet in the mid-1990s to help his patients whose weight and blood chemistries were not improving on the standard, low-fat American Heart Association diet. His balanced approach became the basis for The South Beach Diet, his first non-academic book, which became an international best seller. Subsequent books published under The South Beach Diet franchise also became bestsellers in the US, including: The South Beach Diet Cookbook (2004); The South Beach Diet Good Fats Good Carbs Guide (2004); The South Beach Diet Quick & Easy Cookbook (2005); and The South Beach Diet Dining Guide (2005). His next two books were The South Beach Diet Parties & Holidays Cookbook (October 2006) and The South Beach Heart Program: The 4-Step Plan that Can Save Your Life (January 2007).

Where It's Going
In 2004, Dr Agatston founded The Agatston Research Foundation for the purpose of conducting and funding original research on diet, cardiac and disease prevention. The Foundation is dedicated to improving the heart health and wellness of individuals through research, education, and prevention. His goal is to educate and empower both his patients and the public about healthy lifestyle choices and disease prevention, encouraging the practice of such prevention in America and throughout the world. In creating The Agatston Research Foundation, Dr Agatston is fulfilling a personal dream as he continues to 'change the way America eats'.

Dr Agatston lectures extensively on prevention both nationally and internationally and has served as a reviewer for major medical cardiology journals. In addition to his work with his wife, Sari, on the South Beach Diet and The Agatston Research Foundation, Dr Agatston maintains a cardiology practice in Miami Beach, where they reside. The Agatstons have two sons currently attending college.

I've used this book for the past few months now, and i can't recommend it enough for anyone out there who, like me, hates dietary 'fads'; a new one seems to appear every other week, and most of them are either unworkable over the long term or unpalatable at any time.

If you want to lose weight fast, then you can choose to stick to Agatston's 3 phase method, of eliminating certain foods for short time periods then gradually reintroducing them, but not having the patience or interest, I tend to use his recipes to simply eat healthily on a day to day basis.

It's an American book with US terms and measurements, but this isn't a problem; if I can't get any ingredients, or don't like what he's suggested, it's very easy to substitute like for like. The recipes are organised in chapters, by main ingredient - fish/side dishes/veg dishes/salads/meat/desserts etc. Being a dairy lover, I like the fact that cheese and cream aren't eliminated; healthier options are substituted, such as sour cream, ricotta and mozzarella. Pasta is still in there, but whole wheat is recommended. Sweet potato and tortilla wraps are generally used instead of white potatoes and bread.

This is currently one of 2 hardback South Beach recipe books that are available; there's also a smaller paperback outlining the theories and methods behind the diet which i'm sure is useful if you can be bothered to read it. Personally, i'm not too interested in the theory but the recipes in both books are great, and I dip in and out of both all the time. They also work well as stand-alone cookbooks if you're not interested in dieting/health issues and just want some simple, tasty meals to impress your friends and family with.

The South Beach Diet does work. The principles are well written and the recommended menu programme is easily followed. As with all diets, the programme needs to be followed closely, showing a high degree of commitment from the user. However, on this diet, you will not go hungry and will eat quality food that will achieve positive results. The Quick and Easy Cookbook is designed to be used when the reader reaches the final or maintenance stage of the weight loss programme. It contains lots of additional recipes to sustain a healthy lifestyle yet provide variety and balance. This book is best purchased along with the original handbook, the South Beach Diet.

I love my South Beach Cookbook, there are lots of easy recipes to make your day to day easier.
I have to take my lunch to work everyday and run out of ideas, with my SB book I take little time to make healthy lunches.

I have the previous books and I found this cookbook easy to follow, though I would say that some of the recommended ingredients such as types of cheese and condiments are only US market based. Overall, is a good option for those that already know the South beach diet. I was a bit disappointed when I found most of the recipes were already on the internet published so you can always just google and odds are half the recipes will already be there..

I am an American living in England. I have this cookbook in the States and I love it. The recipes are easy and very tasty. And, the bonus is, you really will lose weight and feel better cooking the South Beach way.
