Amazon.co.uk Review

Beautifully illustrated, with over a hundred colour photos, Eyewitness South Africa is a clearly presented guide to that fascinating country and a superior guidebook overall. It is easy to navigate, with clear instructions on how to get the most from the contents, and enjoyable to browse through, whether you intend to travel there or not. After an introduction encompassing South Africa's flora, fauna and wildlife, each region is clearly described, with detailed practical information on shopping, entertainment, restaurants, museums and clearly delineated roadmaps. Sport, cultural events and architecture are all covered en route, as are the country's turbulent history and cultural heritage.

The guide's main strength is its appealing design and excellent photographs. South Africa's wildlife, one of the country's main attractions, is depicted in all its diversity, with plenty of information on the various wild species and where to find them. The section on restaurants and accommodation, included in the "travellers' needs" section, is informative. Entertainment and special interest vacations are included in the same chapter. The survival guide contains invaluable information on security, health, potential hazards, telecommunications and train, road and air travel. It would be difficult to read this book and not wish to explore this intriguing, dynamic and breathtakingly beautiful country. --Philippa West

This really is THE only guide you will need when visiting South Africa. The book opens with a number of pages devoted to SA culture and history. It follows with a fully comprehensive section on Cape Town - the bulk of the book devoted to pages and pages of well photographed things to do, places to go and things to see. I was constantly told of places to visit in SA by friends and family - the book ALWAYS had the place/attraction I was looking for information on - and always in fantastic detail (with telephone numbers, addresses etc.)
If you are going to South Africa - buy this book !!
