Product Description

Review

"Many unexpected delights." Gramophone 20111201 "Source was there to document all the crazy changes in ... art-music that we're always trying to one-up one another in our purported 'vast knowledge of' here in the TMT office. Score." Tiny Mix Tapes 20110728 "Fascinating... A healthy collection of prose descriptions trying to account for what was going on at the time." -- Stephen Smoliar Examiner.com 20120220 "Remarkable... The book is a delight to hold and view... Highly recommended." -- John Schuster-Craig, Grand Valley State University Fontes Artis Musicae 20130419

'Source' was a key inspiration to those of us aspiring to be 'composers' or sound artists in the 1970s. This volume manages to successfully evoke much of the magic (for Europeans) of contact with the US-based ideas of the time, and replicates their original idiosyncratic layout and landscape format albeit in a slightly condensed form, and without the memorable covers. Larry Austin's visionary project is here given a wider audience, and will perhaps go some way to explaining for that new audience what it felt like to be playing with sound at the time. There are riches on every page.

Anyone interested in the American musical avant-garde should have this book. I'm glad I found a book dealer with one still in stock.
