Great Debut for this Prog Rock Trio 30 July 2010
By Diane - Published on
Format: Audio CD
Got a chance to see these guys and they did not disappoint. I've been a fan of King Crimson so I expected to see something similar but what I got was even more. I'm familiar with the great skills of Tony Levin and Pat Mastelotto but had not seen Michael Bernier play before. (His solo bow playing on the Chapman Stick is outrageous) his skill is beyond question and plays like he's been with these guys for 20 years. (Although I don't think he has been ... he looks like he's in his 30's). The music was tight and strong and came across similar to Crimson in parts but even more creative and dynamic. They played 2 Crimson covers "Elephant Talk" & "Red" superbly (in other words they kicked butt). I especially liked the CD title cut SOUP. If you get a chance to see Stick Men, do it!!, they have a great show. I bought the CD at the show and thought it was great as well. Excellent recording, excellent production value. This will be a collectors item soon. Jump on it.

Soup, by Stickmen 14 Oct. 2011

What a record! and to think there are only two Chapman Stick players and one drummer! They really achieve a full sound, rivaling the completeness of an orchestra. The trio experiments with a wide range of styles incorporating all sorts of genres. The first track has vocals almost similar to hip-hop, and the last 4 tracks are an electronic, modern adaptation of Stravinsky's famous ballet, "The Firebird Suite." That alone is testament to how experimental they are. The album is layered with all sorts of sounds, reminiscent of King Crimson, cello pieces, neoclassical rock, and funk. I strongly recommend this album to any fan of Tony Levin's work, the Chapman Stick, progressive rock, and King Crimson.

I liked it soooo much I bought two! 23 Nov. 2011

The opening is amazing and this is some of the best bass (I mean stick) playing ever. Long a fan of Tony Levin (even though he's a Yankee), all of you King Crimson fans need to buy this and support Stick Men so there will be another. Excellent quality. I am wondering though by the liner notes, did these guys record it separately and then mix it together??? Does anybody know? If so, this brings in a new age of Internet-based recording.
A Matter of Taste and Timing 28 April 2013

My rating would be just below 4 stars, so we give these guys a push. While I definitely enjoyed listening to it, I was never at any moment "blown away" by it, so I would call it solid. To my ear, there's quite a bit of melody and musicality to almost every song here, but that might be a matter of taste. The "timing" is simply this - were King Crimson releasing albums every two to six years, I would probably rate this one lower. Instead, I probably rate it higher since it's as close as one can get to what I love about KC.
More Soup Please... :-) 29 Oct. 2014

I'd give it more stars if I could! The Stick Men are awesome! These guys are serious musicians, but they don't take themselves too seriously. The first time you hear the song "Soup," you will wind up with a huge smile on your face, then get really into the groove they lay down. And the rest of the album is terrific!
