Though probably best remembered for his work on The Pink Panther
, Mancini worked on the music for hundreds of television shows and films, from Abbot and Costello Lost in Alaska
(his first major commission) to Breakfast at Tiffany's
(for which he and Johnny Mercer won the Best Oscar, for "Moon River"). Now thought of as "easy listening", Mancini's scores work well as background music--but they were designed to give life to specific scenes, which they do quite notably. For Charade
, a Cary Grant/Audrey Hepburn vehicle set in Paris, Mancini illustrates the city's funkier sides ("Mambo Parisienne"), but also puts a uniquely French spin to "Punch and Judy". For the darker Experiment in Terror
, the composer uses more dramatic sounds, but also lets it fly in a number of songs that were used to back up scenes of dancing teens--though it's hard to imagine clubbing to the likes of "Experiment in Terror (Twist)" or "Golden Gate Twist" today. --Bucky Wunderlick
