Okay, so he isn't the greatest interpreter of songs & hasn't got the best voice in pop, but his abilities are far greater than a previous reviewer would have you believe. He has chosen an excellent brace of 80s songs, & sings them with verve & gusto, his vocals lusty, bright & honest. He obviously really enjoys singing these songs because it comes across in his delivery, & I really enjoy listening to them. Yes, I have most of the tracks by the original artists & love playing them still, but I find this CD a joyous listen. It's honest-to-goodness, straight-forward, enjoyable pop! It makes me happy. What more could you ask of an album?
Okay, I have now had this album for a week or so & after having given it many more plays, I felt I wanted to add to my initial review. I now believe that his voice has actually improved since his 80s hey-day. Listen to Don't Leave Me This Way to surely hear a wider vocal range. He can certainly hit those high notes. Also, there is greater light & shade in his voice, & I love the gentle, warm huskiness he uses for Sign Your Name, & he puts it to excellent use again in the self-penned new song, Goodnight Baby. This is destined to become of of my all-time favourite albums. I can't get enough of it! Give it a go!!
