Controversy about the film aside; this soundtrack has some genuinely different strokes to most Hollywood releases. Based on covers of famous tracks, some of the weirdly ethereal and slow-paced tunes will have you singing along in this new tempo because you already know all the words to the Eurhythmics' - Sweet Dreams or the Pixie's - Where is my mind? for example. Each of the tracks has been altered to a significant degree, these aren't just covers but "re-imaginings" and this is probably a legitimate claim as they bear little similarity to the originals, anyhow this score was put together by Zack Snyder's usual music composer - Tyler Bates.
The best track on the album features some high-profile artists that you wouldn't naturally put together (Skunk Anasie & Bjork) but surprisingly, it really works. Most notable is Emily Browning's (the actress who plays Babydoll) lead-singing presence on a few of the tracks, that girl can really sing, kudos to her!
The songs feature very prominently in the film, becoming launch-points for the dream sequences but in all honestly, that is probably where they should have stayed; coupled to explosive action or whimsical fantasy scenes as on their own this a very disjointed album that has completely altered some songs that were great to begin with and didn't really need a rehashing. Worth a listen for the slower version of "Where is my Mind?" which I personally loved, but I doubt it will get much play after the first couple of listens. Recommended for fan-boys but don't sweat it if you miss it.
