Just how did a six-man instrumental group with just two small UK Top Fifty hits justify three LP's during their career? Quality. Six musicians, many multi-instrumentalists, playing impeccable renditions of wide-ranging material, from rocked-up classics to surprisingly mature original compositions.

Their break came in 1961 when chosen to back visiting rocker Gene Vincent both live and in the studio when his own group were disavowed into the UK in 1961 which led to their first single, "Emily" - the name of the converted ambulance the group travelled in to gigs! After little chart impression their move to Decca coincided with honing their mix of raucaus barnstormers and more exotic tunes that set them apart from the majority of other UK instrumental bands. Backing a string of top US music pop and rock stars cemented their reputation and what is possibly their "golden period" began when Brian Epstein signed Sounds to his management company. With Epstein as guiding light they became Cilla Blacks' live backing group and also toured the world, opening for the Beatles including at the famous Shea Stadium!

All the tracks on this set emanate rom their two UK LP's while with Columbia. It's just unfortunate their full sound and happy-go-lucky energetic stage presence didn't always make the full transistion to cold vinyl, but they tried real hard. However, much material recorded for television survives and can be found on the Web - check their entries on the ubiquitous You Tube to get a feeling for that and some of their live stage act - amazing. The music on this CD was recorded when recording methods of the time were distinctly of their era, but some of the groups exprtise and enthusiasm does break through. Difficult to pinpoint real standout tracks as many are good examples of their genre in different moods.

Their two UK LP's from 1964 and 1966, both confusingly titled "Sounds Incorporated" are featured here, back-to-back and in stereo. Fans of 1960's will often say that mono recordings are better that stereo, and often that is true. The first 12 cuts are from their 1964 LP and while competent in stereo, seek out the original mono LP if possible as the mix is superior and more powerful. But hey! - should I be complaining when all tracks are present and correct and in full CD-quality? The final thirteen cuts are only two years later and intended to be cut in stereo for EMI's fledgling "Stereo 2" album line. The production and mixes are far fuller and powerful as a result. The selection of music indicates the start of their subtle shift towards a more polished cabaret future, however - can anyone explain why "Goldfinger", the original LP opening track or the magnificent "Boil Over" group original were never issued in the UK as singles back in 1966? Oh well.

Currently (2009) you can obtain this set plus a new collection covering all "The Singles" output including all Decca sides including possibly their most collectable coupling, recorded with Joe Meek; "Keep Movin"/"Order Of The Keys". Also aboard is the rare Polydor vocal single from 1967 which while pleasant is further proof of their cabaret leanings at this time. Mention should also be made of another unique selction, "Tarzan" (!) which although duplicating some tracks on this set and "The Singles" does manage to include three previously unreleased cuts AND (for those interested) their third and final studio album. This was recorded during the groups last couple of years residing in Australia, not long before their split and was released in many countries but not the UK. Being more middle-of-the-road it is mainly vocal, as befits the groups persona during this final period in their career, but at least it does include three instro's.

Sounds Incorporated's sales potential will never compare against many of their contemporaries, but fans of quality instrumental work should not be disappointed in this CD set. With many individual group cuts from across their career now available on various instrumental compliations from specialist outlets interest in the recorded history of the group has never been higher.
