A Great Debut 25 Dec 2011
By Jaidis Shaw - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
Sounding Waters by B.T. Hoskins is a debut novel worth reading filled with intriguing characters, a unique storyline and just enough surprise twists to keep the story fresh. The people of Kretia pride themselves on delivering only male offspring so when Seraphix is born, everyone looks down upon her and her family. Everyone that is except for her Grandfather who knows that Sera will play an important part in the world.

Though Sounding Waters is her debut novel, B.T. Hoskins has done a wonderful job of creating a unique world that is filled with unforgettable characters. I kept turning the pages wondering what would happen next as my heart went out to Sera. The author has done a wonderful job at balancing Sera to be an incredibly strong and fragile character simultaneously. Just as she begins to open her heart to the possibility of having friends, maybe even love, there always seems to be a force against her.

I felt as though the ending was a little abrupt and maybe could have had more of the twists explained but that is just my personal opinion. There is some minor adult language that is integral to the storyline but Sounding Waters can easily be enjoyed by young adult fans of fantasy novels. If you like fantasy novels, definitely check out Sounding Waters.

Excellent debut novel from a new up-and-coming writer! 6 Oct 2011
By Scott Niven - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I just finished reading Sounding Waters, the debut fantasy novel from B.T. Hoskins, and loved it. If you've read and enjoyed any of Ursula K. Le Guin's Earthsea books, then I believe you'll enjoy Sounding Waters. That's not to say that the storylines are similar. Mrs. Hoskins has created a unique world populated with memorable characters that are all her own. But her writing style and development of the story resembles the tone and pace of Earthsea books 2-4. And that, in my mind, is a (very) good thing.

One thing I really enjoyed about Sounding Waters was my inability to guess what would happen next. Each time I thought I'd figured out some of the mysteries present in the book, a new twist would occur that would cause me to reassess what I'd read so far. These creative (and logical) surprises continue all the way until the final page of the book. I'm not going to say anything more because part of the fun of this book was in learning about the story as it occurred.

In closing, if you enjoy well-written fantasy, then you really need to order or download a copy of Sounding Waters today!

Nice world building 6 Oct 2011
By Shala Kerrigan - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I don't like synopsis type reviews so I'll get straight to my impressions of the book without any spoilers.

The world is well written, the idea of societies that are built around tradition and physical attributes such as gender has been done before. Hoskins puts her own spin on it quite well and creates a believable village political system.

The main characters are engaging and likable. Seraphix and Gaius are both young adults learning to cope in the world, Aserias makes a wonderful father/grandfather figure who is wise and caring. Pen is just adorable. The villains in this book are very well written, from the petty evil of a controlling society to the big bad evil that is taking over the land.

As well as the main plot, there are sub-plots that develop the characters well.

The reason I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 was because as much as I enjoyed the narrative, there were a couple scenes that threw me right out of it. Characters that didn't behave in a realistic fashion. But it was only a handful of scenes and it didn't throw me out enough to put stop reading. I finished the book in an evening and did recommend it to my teens as one they might enjoy.

While two of the main characters are young adults and this could be a ya novel, there is off screen graphic violence and some plot integral adult language.

I did enjoy it, and hope to read more books by this author.

Disclosure- I received a free copy of this book for review purposes, after making it clear that my review would be my honest opinion. And it is.
