5.0 out of 5 stars The world has just shrunk!, 26 Aug 2007
By Paul Madge (West Sussex UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This radio has revolutionised my listening habits for two reasons; the range of stations - about 5000 plus the exceptional sound quality. It is simplicity itself to set up - it detects your broadband network and assuming you have a secure network you enter the WEP code (on the back of your router)and it's connected - no aerials (unless you want to use the FM facility). Initially, it will update its software and you then have 5000 stations to choose from and they are searchable by genre e.g. 80's 90's country, spoken work, jazz, pop, you name it and you'll find it (you can also search by station name etc).

At this moment I'm listening to Louis Armstrong from a station in the "Russian Federation" in crystal clear sound. The internal sound system is something else - it has 2 full range speakers plus an internal woofer unit and despite this it is very compact. This radio has that deep "luxus" sound that is so elusive elsewhere. Additionally, it has a superb fluorescent display which gives you both textual information about the station, location, artist, song etc. plus a wide range of "visualisation" equaliser type displays.

Few gadgets have made such an impact on me - this product showcases the world and the diversity of music available. It really is a treat but something much more than a "5 minute wonder" - it's life changing! Buy with confidence (especially at this price) and be delighted.

5.0 out of 5 stars DAB Killer, 12 Feb 2008
By Nigel (Swansea) - See all my reviews
I needed something like this because I have suddenly realised I stopped listening to local radio early last year and have replaced indifferent BBC and local commercial services with podcasts and talk from all over via iTunes. I looked at the Roberts version and felt it was too much of an overkill for my needs. This looked more like a friendly tranny type radio so I went for it. When I got the box it was so heavy that I thought they sent me the wrong thing. When I opened it up I was still convinced that I had the wrong thing...it was more of a bit of furniture rather than a take anywhere radio. It was when I turned it on that I realised what I had been missing for years, the sound quality was superb, far better than I could ever have imagined which means that I am now playing far more music through it than I ever thought I would. But it was the connectivity that really amazed me. As a convert from pc to mac I'm now getting used to things working straight from the box and this was certainly no disappointment. once I let it through my mac's ferocious firewall the thing sync'd with iTunes and gave me full access to all my sound files. Not completely plain sailing... I needed to use the Firefly music server to really get compatibility but that was nothing. The little remote control is superb and as a piece of design the whole unit is very classy. The buttons have a good positive click and you can see that the ergonomics have been really thought through. What really delighted was the display which although is basically only two lines or so is so well arranged that it is extremely easy to surf any web radio lists. When you register with the Roku website you get a place to store your favourites and loads of other widgets and a very good forum of discussion. Its mains only which is a pain but I'll live with that because of all the benefits. Now I understand why people are dumping DAB...mines already gone! If someone can do all of this with battery option it would be the total package...

4.0 out of 5 stars Soundbridge Radio (Roku for Pinnacle), 30 Oct 2006
By M. Webster "webbo73" (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I'm not sure if this is freely available in the UK yet, but after several delays I bought mine from avides, an amazon marketplace seller. Their service was excellent.

The product comes with mains adaptors for europe, UK and the US - and apart from a pinnacle logo, is identical to the Roku soundbridge radio available in the US. (The only area where it differs - which annoys me and hence affects the overall score - is the lack of Itunes compatiblity due to licensing issues for Pinnacle).

If you want an all in one bedisde / kitchen radio that sounds great and needs no external speakers etc. then this is a very good product. It's not perfect, but this is still a fairly immature market and a niche product. The main plus point for me is that it can play internet stations (not currently real audio though so can't play several of the BBC services without a PC and conversion progs.) and can play mp3's, am/fm radio all with very good sound quality for this type of device (as it has an integrated subwoofer at the back). The nearest thing I can compare it to soundwise is the Bose Waveradio.

It has very good build quality and isn't too obtrusive physically. I find the control interface a little fiddly and there are some functions that can only be accessed via the remote and some via the body of the radio itself which seems rather silly to me.

I've been waiting for a product like this for sometime so I can forgive it's foibles but I hope they are taking on the comments of their early adopters so that their next version will be even better.
