The SoundDock® Portable digital music system was designed for portability. It has a sleek look, built-in carrying handle and a revolving dock -- with a rechargeable lithium-ion battery for hours of listening pleasure in-between charges. The system is compatible with all iPhone models and most iPod models and is "Made for iPhone/iPod" certified. Get more power and longer playing time with the Bose rechargeable lithium-ion battery, which delivers up to eight hours play. It recharges whenever you plug the system into a wall outlet. The swivelling iPhone and iPod docking station conveniently folds into place for safe transit. Bose-own acoustic design provides more efficient and higher quality sound reproduction than many other battery-powered iPhone and iPod speaker systems. The integrated carrying handle makes it easy to take your system with you no matter where you’re going, even outdoors. Your docked iPod/iPhone charges in the iPod/iPhone charger, whenever the system is plugged in, even while you’re listening to music. Customer Reviews
* The sound is both crystal clear and powerful. It punches above its weight and its sound can convincingly fill a room.
* As with all Bose systems (in my experience) the bass can be a little OTT and unfortunately there isn't the flexibility to specify your sound settings through the Bose directly - the brand generally takes a like-it-or-lump-it approach to sound. However, it is possible with my iPhone very easily to adjust the equaliser settings to, for example, "Bass Reducer", "Piano", "Spoken Word" etc etc and this has completely eliminated the issue for me.
* It is sleek and very good looking. There is a neat little remote, but also a very subtle volume touch control on the side of the unit - it's so subtle in fact that I didn't know that it was there for a couple of weeks! All that is required is the lightest touch of a finger to increase or decrease the volume.
* It is solidly constructed and has the feel of quality.
* Although, as a result of its heavier weight, it isn't quite as portable as the cheaper options, it is designed to accommodate portability, with a handle at the back and a retractable iPod dock. The iPod connection itself is a little wobbly but hasn't yet proved to be an issue although I do handle it with care.
* It quite happily charges my iPhone 4, which seems not always to be the case with these devices.
All in all I am delighted and it has even convinced my husband, who is both an acoustics snob and not a fan of Bose, that it is a great little unit.
We've moved almost all of our CD collection onto various iPods or iPhones so wanted a sound system which would a) do them justice acoustically b) be portable and c) not take up too much space in the kitchen. I listened to the Sounddock 10 in a store and found the bass too heavy for me. So I went for this instead and it gets 5 stars on all counts.
As it has a lithium-ion battery it is portable and as it is compact it fits well in the kitchen. So far so good - but the sound quality is fabulous. The clarity of the various instruments in a rock pop song was amazing. Bass and percussion clear and providing the right bass notes. High notes from a soprano sax were clear and sharp. Vocals were not drowned and came across superbly.
And if you want volume - well this will crank it right up. Yes if I turn it up to 11 it will distort but by that stage it is too loud to enjoy anyway.
You do, of course, find that there is a premium price for this type of quality but in my view it is worth every penny (though I did get it for less then the RRP).
The only concern I have is whether the dock for the iPod or iPhone is going to be robust enough to last for a lot of years. But since we have only had it a couple of weeks I cannot judge that yet.
