This is a great portable speaker which only use up one AA battery for approx. 8 hrs of continous play. It's very well made with quality materials. It's small and it's easy to pack. It also offer differnt way of powering up the speaker (via USB cable to your computer). I used it most with my Ipods however it's alwasy handy to have the 3.5mm plug in case you need to plug it into a computer or PSP, etc. I've generally found the quality of the sound acceptable, but would be even better if I can crank up the volume a bit more. The volume is only capable in filling a small quiet room. Overall if you are going for the style and portability, go for it (especially your Ipod will sit nicely on top). If you want something louder, I suggest you get a bigger model.

This isn't especially cheap but it is nicely packaged. The coloured parts of the 'cabinet' are soft touch. It has squashy rubberised feet on the bottom that stop it vibrating or wobbling if you put it down on a hard surface.
There's a tiny power switch on the back, along with a volume wheel, a line-in and a power-in connector. The supplied USB cable plugs into the power-in socket to power the speaker as an alternative to the battery. There's also a little cable to connect the device to anything with a headphone socket - i.e. something that's not an iPod. You get an AA battery too. For travel there's a slightly utilitarian semi-transparent plastic box that the speaker and its accessories fit neatly into.
The Soundtraveller is very neatly made and attractive. It looks cute with an iPod nano on top, especially if the colour matches. But I use it with my iPod Touch too and it's stable enough. Not so good for video with an iPod Touch or iPhone since you have to turn it on its side.
The iPod dock means you can plug your iPod straight onto it and you're ready to go. Using the dock connector bypasses the iPod's internal amplifier so the iPod volume control no longer works. The advantage is that your iPod battery should last longer than when you use headphones.

But how does it sound? Well, for a tiny speaker (actually there are two speakers, giving a slight stereo effect) powered by 1 AA battery, it sounds surprisingly good. The sound is quite crisp and undistorted at decent volumes (the LED on the front is supposed to flash if you've got the volume too high for it but I couldn't get it to do this - probably only happens when you use the line-in from an amplified source). Vocals sound pretty good. Everything else sounds detailed but of course there's no bass to speak of, so if you listen to bass-heavy music, forget it. Great for podcasts though. Volume goes more than high enough if you're in a fairly quiet place.
On the whole, I like it. It's a nice object that almost matches the style and quality of an iPod, while giving you the chance to let your friends hear your music without headphones. It's also highly portable and fully equipped with accessories, if a little bit pricey. You don't need an iPod to use it, but you are paying for that dock connector...
