Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

From the explosive surf-guitar twang of its opening track (Dick Dale and His Del-Tones' "Misirlou" from Pulp Fiction), Soundtrack takes you on an evocative journey through all your favourite cult movies. Spanning several decades' worth of film music, this collection includes poignant 70s classics such as "Get Carter" by Roy Budd and "Cavatina" by John Williams (from The Deer Hunter), through to 80s hits with "Pretty in Pink" by the Psychedelic Furs and to the 90s with "Walk This Land" by the Ez Rollers (from Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels).

This diverse collection takes in ballads such as "Everybody's Talkin'" by Nilsson (from Midnight Cowboy) to the contemporary dance of Underworld's "Born Slippy" (from Trainspotting)--with each track vividly bringing to mind the movie from which it was culled--even the scene itself, in the case of tracks such as Stealer's Wheel's chillingly cheerful "Stuck In The Middle With You" (from that scene in Resevoir Dogs). All this, plus it's got the killer track from Kill Bill Vol 1 by the 5,6,7,8's (you know, the one that goes "woo, hoo; woo, woo, woooh"). Crack open the popcorn and enjoy. --Paul Eisinger

music in films 14 Jun 2004

Quite an odd mix of tracks, you will go from John Williams to Elvis to the Dead Kennedys. But it seems to work as each track will take you mind to a famous scene or a movie that you love.
It has`nt been off the stereo.

There is no denying the brilliance of these songs. You get the haunting christmas number one Mad World by gary Jules from the excellent Donnie Darko, the classic Born Slippy from Trainspotting, arguably the greatest club song ever, and the beautiful Something To Talk About by Badly Drawn Boy from his indispensable soundtrack to About A Boy. The movies from which the songs come from are truly the best of recent years. Film buffs can listen to the songs from their favourite movies and remember the scenes which they so excellently soundtracked. Plus, the skill of Quentin Tarantino as a master of finding the ideal soundtrack is well on truly on show. Most of the songs here are from his films.

Yet together the result is patchy. There is a real mix of genres here and they seem to have been placed together rather sporadically. As a result, classic rock can be followed by soul, which in turn can be followed by techno. This definately is not mood music, and really does not work when listened to as a whole. However, as a collection of some of the most memorable songs from the best films of recent years, this is truly unmissable. It is just a shame that the collection as a whole is unsuitable as a soundtrack for any occasion.

..great songs, but mixed up together, with no balance. They must be better ways to make an album.
