By every unwritten law of pop music, Girls Aloud SHOULD be awful. A manufactured group, the product of an appalling reality TV show, they don't play any instruments, all their songs come from a hit factory's production line... how could they not be awful?

And yet, somehow, inexplicably, they're brilliant. Not brilliant in an ironic, postmodern, arched-eyebrow-and-knowing-smirk way - just brilliant. And its not only pop fans who love their records; serious musos and critics love them too.

Over a period of four years they've produced a dazzling array of joyous pop classics, and they're all included here. Despite the fact that the writing team at Xenomania works with many other artists, the songs they produce for Girls Aloud are somehow unique. I mean, who else but the Girls releases songs like 'Love Machine' or 'Biology'? There's just something wonderfully giddy and effervacious about a Girls Aloud song that makes it irresistable, no matter how hard you try to tell yourself you really shouldn't be enjoying it. It's difficult to pick favourites when the tunes are all of such high quality, but if pressed mine would be 'The Show' and 'No Good Advice'. They even manged to produce a terrific ballad in 'Life Got Cold'.

My only minor gripe (and it is a minor one) is the inclusion of the three cover versions, none of which have been as good as their original material. Nevertheless, this is an essentital album for anyone who loves their pop. Long may they continue!

i have reviewed the greatest hits album separately..its brilliant..so is it worth spashing out more for the 2 disc edition?

"no good advice" is pretty much the same as the single version..it says parental advisary..but i see nothing different to the version on disc1..its a great song but as an extra its disappointing 5/10

"wake me up" is an interesting version..alternative lyrics and a bit different but not just a dance mix 9/10

"i predict a riot" is good...great track and a good cover but im not a fan of live recordings..would be better if it was a studio version 8/10

"sound of the underground" is an extended version and again is not just a dance mix..its the original about 10 seconds longer 7/10

"hanging on the telephone" a cover of blondies hit is great..and nice to hear the girls version..its pretty much faithful to the original 7/10

"loving is easy" was a b-side and was previously only available on a single...its a great ballad..a nice ballad but nothing outstanding! 7/10

"singapore" is a reject from chemistry and its the best song on the album..wish there was mre like this! 9/10

"sacred trust" takes you back to when they won the popstars..the boyband released this as their first single..originally it was a bee gees track..its a lovely song but the girls version is average! nice to hear it though! 8/10

unless you are a girls aloud fan i would stick to the one disc version as there is little hear to justify the extra money...if you are a fan it may be of interest!

I have to admit that I am a huge Girls Aloud fan. For me, they actually hit that balance between being entirely pop-friendly and something slightly different. I do agree that it's easy to perhaps celebrate them unduly as more than the sum of their parts, as they are essentially one of only a few girl groups in the UK at the moment, not counting the Sugababes (although All Saints are making a resurgence), but to their credit they have consistently provided us with ace pop songs. Cynics would perhaps attribute all their success to their rather splendid writing team (Xenomania) but I feel this is overlooking the dynamics of the group which are as much a contributory factor; they all can actually sing and have distinct vocals. They're never going to push the envelope but they are evolving from album to album and they do have an unmistakable sound which is all their own. That said, three albums in is way too early to bring out a greatest hits album and does perhaps demean the notion that they're all in for the long haul but it is a great pop album and the hits are likely to keep on coming...
