This review is from: The Sound of Monsterism Island Vol 1 (Audio CD)
Having previously heard a few of the Monsterism tunes on Sean Rowley's radio show I was aware of what to expect, but I didn't think that a mix-tape compilation could possibly exceed the granduer of Saint Eitenne's The Trip comp. Monsterism Island is simply amazing, a consise and wonderful trawl through the shallows of exotica, early electronica and 60s soft-rock. The 20 tracks that form the comp have been put together by skillfully by Pete Fowler (whom you may know from his Super Furry sleeve designs) and blend into a magical whole (except for the slight disturbance that is East of Eden's 'Jig-A-Jig'; which sounds like the kind of folk music played by Morris Dancers, it takes a whole minute and a half to transform itself into something approaching listenable). My highlights include the Martin Denny tracks(especially Sake Rock), the eerie West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band song, the obligatory Eden Ahbez track (please somebody, reissue this guy's album) and the stunning 'Love Without Sound' by The White Noise (apparently linked to the late Delia Derbyshire)and would not seem out of place on Warp Records. Explore the depths and highs of this album, I implore you.

Magnificent from start to end. One of the best compilations around. On a par with Nuggets.Only 7,000 or so copies sold? Sheer madness. Accompanied with Pete Fowlers' lovely lovely artwork. I wanna live on this island.Let's all join the mountain people. Only gripe.....when is Vol.2 likely to arrive? And try and get someone to put this to vinyl,Fowlers artwork is great LP sized(Super Furries songbook).
