Product Description

Product Description

When Cassidy Walker stumbles into the middle of the highway, bloodied and bruised, Bard college in flames behind her, and manages to flag down a ride, she thinks the worst is over. Arriving in the nearby town of Red Hook, Cassidy tries to call her parents but the phone lines are down - no radio or television signals are being received either. The town, it seems, is cut off from the rest of the world. But that's not the strangest thing. Not by a long shot. Nobody in Red Hook has even heard of Bard College. Furthermore, they claim that Cassidy is not a music student, but a hand at the local stable. And she has lived in a house she can't remember, with people she barely knows, for over a year. The world is fracturing. Cassidy just knows it - just as she knows that she is responsible. As Cassidy undertakes the ultimate road trip, through bubbles of reality, she will find that everything she thinks she knows about herself is wrong. Is she losing her mind or is the world a far more complex place than she thought?

4.0 out of 5 stars more guerrilla salvos from the post-consumer poet, 23 Sep 2007
By S. Egan (uk) - See all my reviews

this is another good book from tricia sullivan. like double vision it's a lot of fun. her characters are great - especially when they start kicking back.

what really marks tricia out is her way of writing dense, deeply poetic passages about what the modern world is doing to human nature. towards the end of this book there is the most extraordinary sustained paean to salvaging humanity from consumerism and over-rationalism i've come across in ages. and the journey to it is great too with her usual mind-twisting adventures.

really no-one writes about where we are like she does - grieving, fighting, elegiac and celebratory. and so relevant to modern consciousness its breathtaking. its like hearing your own howls given air and allowed to make music.

my one reservation is that the line between mental health and sci-fi narrative tropes isn't handled as adroitly as it could have been. double vision walked the line a lot better - here things get a little too defined leading to a few disturbing implications. but, you know, this is a writer who is putting herself out there and taking risks so we can't expect a pitch perfect performance every time (a major theme of the book actually).

a big, edgy, fun, challenging read from a woman with a heart.

by the way, its probably a good idea to read double vision before this one. it will enhance your enjoyment of it a lot more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mind-expanding, 2 April 2007
By A. Wasenczuk "speedbird2" (Hampshire, UK) - See all my reviews

Marvellous - I devoured this in three sittings. Kind of like 'Z for Zachariah' meets 'The Eyre Affair' - student Cassidy Walker has a very strange end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it to contend with. And though this is high-concept stuff, the writing style is refreshingly straightforward. Wonderful, wonderful food for thought.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sullivan's Travels, 20 Oct 2008
By J. Mishra (Derby, UK) - See all my reviews

I read this in one night, it was so gripping. Sullivan has carved out her own niche, she is so removed from the mainstream tropes of SF and that's a good thing. If you're looking for warring empires and flaming hulks of spaceships, you probably won't enjoy this.

However, if you're looking for a wonderful ride through mindbending / expanding landscapes and some truly icky and spooky set-pieces, buy this. Parts of it reminded me of Dick's Valis trilogy, it has that same kind of unsettling and simultaneously compelling imagery.

Without a doubt, Sullivan is one of the most important writers in current SF.
