Product Description

Product Description

Sound City: Real to Reel is the official soundtrack of the documentary film Sound City which examined the history of the Los Angeles recording studio Sound City Studios.

The film was directed by Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl and he features heavily on the album alongside artists such as Trent Reznor, Corey Taylor and Paul McCartney.

BBC Review

As supergroups go, they don’t get much bigger than this.

Put together by Dave Grohl, the cast of musicians for this album is not only comprised of his former Nirvana and current Foo Fighters bandmates, but also includes Stevie Nicks, Josh Homme, Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor, Slipknot’s Corey Taylor and Rick Springfield. Oh, and Paul McCartney.

Conceived after Grohl bought and installed a Neve 8028 analogue recording console from the world famous – but now shut – Sound City studios, the album is a counterpart to the film directed by Grohl about the history of that studio, and about the personal, human connection that comes with writing and recording music using analogue equipment.

Each song was composed and recorded specifically for the film in its own 24-hour session, with Grohl the only constant across these 11 tracks. Notably, it includes Cut Me Some Slack, the song McCartney performed with the former Nirvana members at the 12/12/12 benefit concert.

That’s one of this record’s most successful songs – a blast of abrasive and uncompromising rock’n’roll that sees McCartney turn in what must surely be one of the most feral and fierce performances of his career. He may not be Kurt Cobain, but the 70-year-old ex-Beatle’s fire is impressive nonetheless.

Elsewhere, Stevie Nicks’ vocals on the tremulous You Can’t Fix This are ominous and foreboding, Your Wife Is Calling – on which Fear vocalist Lee Ving steps up to the microphone – is a rambunctious and convincing explosion of old-school hardcore punk, and From Can to Can’t and If I Were Me are soothing swathes of relaxing sound.

It’s not all successful, however. A Trick With No Sleeve (Grohl, Josh Homme and Alain Johannes) is rather pompous and overstated, and Time Slowing Down – appropriately enough – lasts for too long without really going anywhere. The repetitive groove of near-eight minute closer Mantra, featuring Reznor, also outstays its welcome somewhat.

On the whole, though, this is an interesting experiment in the creative process, as well as the values of musicianship and friendship.

A remarkable collection of new material from some very famous names makes a fantastic accompaniment to the very remarkable documentary that Dave Grohl has directed about the studio in the San Fernando Valley that produced some of the most original and influential music over the last 40 years.

Stand out track has to be the collaboration with Stevie Nicks: 'You Can't Fix This' - this is a thrilling, dark, tormented tribute to the death of Nicks' godson to a heroin overdose and just grows and grows in its ominous intensity for 6 wonderful minutes. This recalls Nicks at her 'Gold Dust Woman' best, and the brilliant collaboration with Grohl and co just screams out for 'more!'. It sounds even more impressively intense live too - check out You tube for some top notch recent clips.

Another destined to be classic cut is 'Mantra', whilst the McCartney effort is amongst his best for a while, and even Rick Springfield shows there's some life in the old dog yet.

Highly recommended, and destined to be a classic!

Most of the artists on this album are from before my time but every song is amazing. Pure quality hard rock music. It is also very diverse and has a variety of performers all of which are well respected in the music industry. A good all round record.

I bought this after seeing the film.

The vinyl quality is good and noticeably denser than most standard production LP's, with no pops and cracks that made CD's such an attraction when they appeared beside vinyl in the early 80's. One LP had a slight vertical wobble but this did not affect the playing quality. The only iffy bit was the shrink wrap that possibly contributed to the wobbly vinyl. The Lp;s come in plastic lined paper sleeves with additional card inner liners. The outer cover is made from good quality card, but the combination of paper sleeves, thicker vinyl and thick card outer makes for a snug fit for the contents.

The sound quality is good but one or two of the mixes are not as clear as I felt they should be ("Heaven And All" seems to have little clarity between instruments compared to tracks of a similar pace and BMRC are usually pretty good at this on their own work). The Stevie Nicks track "You Can't Fix This" is positively smokin'! There are no bad tracks on the LP and given the variety of musicians playing, it comes out as better than could be expected. Enjoy at high volume!

I loved Grohl's film, and you can't see the film without wanting this album. Equally if you enjoy this album it's a damn good idea to see the film of the journey to its creation. Unexpected collaborations with quality results.

If you enjoyed the documentary you really ought to buy this which comprises finished versions of the raw material being put together in the film. "Your Wife Is Calling" (Lee Ving with studio band) is a masterclass on how to construct a song in the studio. Other standout tracks for me include the haunting "We Can't Fix This" - Stevie Nicks - and the rocking "Cut Me Some Slack" featuring Paul McCartney doing what he does best and what he should have kept on doing. Every song is worthy of at least 4 out of 5, and many are truly 5 out of 5. Dave Grohl has done a magnificent job here... and it shows!

True there are a couple of weak tracks on here but given the way in which this album written and produced you can forgive them that. However, there are a some truly great tracks from artists in a style that you wouldn't necessarily expect from them.

Dave Grohl records little album in LA on an old mixing board. Little album changes music as we know it and sells millions and millions of copies. Grohl starts new band. Becomes even bigger and bigger. Recording studio shuts down. Panel is up for sale. Grohl buys said piece of equipment and films the process ... making a documentary.

This is the collections of songs he recorded on that mixing board before it left the room. With friends from different bands (Josh Homme, Paul McCartney, Stevie Nicks, Trent Reznor ...) resulting in different songs and genres. Creating an excellent overview of rock music from the 60's, 70's ... straight into the here and now.
