Amazon.co.uk Review

As our culture attempts to find its footing during the transition into postmodernism, Leonard Sweet, dean of the Theological School of Drew University and author of Soul Tsunami, attests that Christians must do the same thing. Soul Salsa is a so-called "lifeware design package" that "enrolls you in a lifestyle seminary where you can get a life degree in artful, soulful living". With ultra-modern packaging (Christians are called "soul artists" and even Leonard's name has a postmodern addition), practical ideas about how to integrate one's faith into daily life in a changing, postmodern culture are introduced. Profound, biblical mandates are given new catch-phrases to make them applicable to our society, such as the chapter titles "Make a Moment" (turn everyday events into memories to cherish), "Never Graduate" (always keep learning and growing) and "Give History a Shove" (make a difference in the world), which modernises Scripture that has previously withstood cultural turbulence. Sweet's premise that "friendship with Jesus is a lot less rigorous than discipleship with Jesus" is a true call to biblical obedience, whether or not the reader is struggling to accept postmodernism. In fact, the sweeping assertion that postmodernism is a universal struggle is a grand generalisation that does not address the fact that truth's anchor will hold no matter what context or culture the Christian is placed in. Practical advice does abound for the reader looking for direction, however, from Web site references for further study (or a few just for laughs!) to probing questions at the end of each chapter. The Christian is influenced to make worship a way of life, to make the outworking of grace a visible commodity, and to make one's allegiance to Christ the revolutionary factor that causes the soul to dance. --Jill Heatherly

For those Christians who have not yet started to grasp the language of post modernism, Soul Salsa by Leonard Sweet will no doubt come as a cultural shock, but for any who have started along the path to understanding spiritual post modernism Sweet's book will come as a breath of fresh air. Every chapter starts with a title that tantalises the mind and the intellectual and spiritual palate is soon given plenty to chew over and digest. Each chapter concludes with further topics for thought or web sites to investigate (although the danger with the Web is that sites sometimes move on).
With constant quotations, frequent illustrations and challenging insights of his own, Sweet gives us interesting, exciting and challenging food for thought, and like any food it will not leave the body the same. Bringing Sweet's gourmet meal down to common parlance, he challenges us to bring God into every area of our lives, make every moment a moment to cherish, and get ready to live long and prosper, but that may not be what you think it is! He goes on to challenge us to use our mind and keep on learning while getting involved with life, to look after our bodies, mind our tongues and stay humble servants. The meal goes on and on, challenging us to impact the world, use our time wisely and economically, waste nothing, view life as an adventure, make the most of wholesome sex, look after our family - and have fun! In other words there are few areas of life he leaves untouched with his clearly Christian and biblical perspective seen through the eyes of a most postmodern man. It's good stuff and if you're still the same at the end of it - you probably haven't read it!

A fresh approach to the historical faith 27 April 2002
By Andrew Edwin Jenkins - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I'm intrigued by this one, because this book departs from Sweet's usual more academic approach to writing (it's not uncommon to see over 200 footnotes, including references to literature, magazines, websites, and recordings in one typical chapter).

It seems to me that Sweet is offering us the practical implications of living out the vision and reality he has painted in "Soul Tsunami" and "Aqua Church." This book reads much faster than either of those, and is certainly more personal than theoretical or corporate.

More readable than "A Cup of Coffee at the Soul Cafe," "Soul Salsa" marks out several "dance steps" you can do to make your life sing right now. All are biblical-- none are legalistic. All are process type things (you work at them, over time, towards a life-style transformation as opposed to just doing "one thing" and checking it off the box) instead of one-shot deals.

Would recommend for believers looking for a fresh approach to historical Christianity, if wanting to get into a small group study but not use one of the pre-packaged fill-in-the-blank books.

the future is now 25 Nov 2000
By David E. Loar - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Having been with Sweet in person, this book is the next best thing. He has seen the future of God's world and what the life in Christ will be in that future...and that future is now. You can dream. You can laugh. You can plan. You can do. Life is alive. Discipleship is a joyous journey not a drag you have to do.

A great addition to any postmodern library 30 May 2000
By Jordon Cooper - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book came with a lot of hype and has lived up to my expectations. It is a practical fun book that also stretched my thinking and my faith. It is a book that will speak to a variety of people at different places on their Christian journey. Recommended!

Jesus is the Master, Mentor, and Maestro of my life. Friendship with Jesus is a lot less rigorous than discipleship with Jesus. To be a disciple of someone is to follow in the steps and spirit of that master artisan. Jesus has too many friends, too many believers. Jesus does not have enough disciples, not enough behavers. "e;
